Two weeks ago, Facebook announced that 50 million users were affected, with the possibility of 40 million additional, so the company restored the "access tokens" or the digital keys of the 90 million accounts.

The violation forced users to re-login to their accounts.

On Friday, the company said there were actually fewer users, 30 million, who were affected by the breach.

But hackers delved into user profiles of what was initially thought, the company said on Friday.

Almost half of those affected (approximately 14 million users) had their username, sex, location / language, relationship status, religion, hometown, current self-identified city, date of birth, types of devices used to access Facebook, education, work, "The last 10 places where they were registered or tagged, the website, the people or the pages that follow, and the 15 most recent searches," the vice president of product management wrote on a blog of the company, Guy Rosen. submit.

These details were exposed sometime between September 14 and September 25 of this year, when the company first discovered the security breach due to a sudden increase in activity. But software errors made the user's information vulnerable from July 2017 until September 2018.

Previously, the company said that only the profile information exposed in the "See as" function was accessed, which is basically the user's name, gender and city of origin.

From 400,000 to 30 million.

The hackers did not access all affected accounts immediately. The hack began with 400,000 profiles, then used the "Friends" and "Friends of Friends" functions to obtain the "digital keys" for 30 million people, Rosen wrote.

Then, "for 15 million people, the attackers accessed two sets of information: name and contact details (phone number, email or both, depending on what people had in their profiles.) For 14 million people , the attackers accessed the same two sets of information, "wrote Rosen.

For some users, they could access the last four digits of their credit card, Rosen said in a follow-up call with reporters.

Information accessed by hackers includes timeline publications, friend lists, Facebook groups, and "names of recent Messenger conversations." The company said that the actual content of the messages was not revealed unless "a person in this group was an administrator of the page whose page received a message from someone on Facebook, the content of that message was available to the attackers."

Rosen said Facebook is cooperating with the FBI's ongoing rape investigation, but would not give details about who the pirates were or where they were based.

"We have not ruled out the possibility of smaller-scale attacks, which we continue to investigate," he added.

"For 1 million people, the attackers did not access any information," Rosen said.

Rosen wrote that this attack did not include Messenger, Messenger Kids, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Pages, payments, third-party applications or advertising accounts or developers.
