The evolution of vacuum robots
The evolution of vacuum robots
Robots vacuum cleaners are one of the most used household appliances for cleaning floors worldwide. And it is not surprising, because current models are amply prepared to face the challenge of keeping homes clean, despite the busy lifestyle we have today.
With new features and capabilities, these robots have far exceeded their original counterpart, and have taken over the domestic tasks that we had to do manually before.
Of all the robotic technology used today, vacuum robots are the ones that have had the greatest impact in our daily lives. But where did everything start?
In this article we are going to look back, to see the evolution of robot vacuum cleaners, from the Trilobite to the the Conga Serie 990 model, and how these little bots have become a very important part of our daily life.
Robots vacuum cleaners: From the beginning until now
The timeline of the story of this little robot is in progress, with new models constantly appearing on the scene, and old models that are updated.
And it all started in 1996, with the first cleaning robot that was created, the Electrolux Trilobite. The concept and design of the first autonomous vacuum cleaner was the brainchild of inventor James Dizon.
The well-known Swedish manufacturer of electrical appliances, Electrolux, was the first to realize the potential of this new and exciting concept.
The company bought the invention from Dizon, and launched the world's first fully functional vacuum cleaner. And although it appeared on a television program, it did not have a great impact on the consumer.
The next big step in robotic technology applied to vacuum cleaners came in 2001, when Dyson built the DC06. However, this model had such a high price that it never made it to the market, and robot vacuum cleaners seemed to be a distant reality for modern homes.
But the wait was not very long. In 2002, the American company iRobot launched the Roomba, which quickly became a well-known name, in fact, it still remains today.
The product was a success, and far exceeded the company's sales expectations. This did not go unnoticed, and several manufacturers realized the potential represented by these robotic vacuum cleaners.
Thus began the race to improve the robotic technology used in these machines, and in this same year Neato launched the XV-11, the first model with laser instead of ultrasound for navigation.
Although these first vacuum robots had an autonomous mode that allowed them to clean without help, their navigation and aspiration left much to be desired. They crashed constantly, stopped and left areas uncleaned while others cleaned them repeatedly.
In addition, their autonomy was very low, which meant that they could not compete directly with conventional vacuum cleaners. However, they were on the right track.
From that moment, all manufacturers have worked to improve the intelligence, navigation and autonomy of their robots.
In 2014 Dyson made a breakthrough, producing a robot with a 360-degree camera mounted on top of the machine to improve its navigation, the Dyson 360 Eye.
This was a different approach with respect to browsing and finding the most efficient route to clean, compared to Neato Robotics or iRobot products.
And it also achieved a higher suction power than its predecessors.
Other advances include the improvement of batteries and the use of smartphone technology to provide the user with greater control of the robot.
Today, robot vacuum cleaners have the most advanced technology, can make a mapping of each room to calculate the most effective cleaning route and the best way to avoid obstacles.
The use of more powerful and durable batteries, and super efficient electric motors, make modern vacuum cleaner robots have a higher suction power and work for longer before having to recharge.
With so many robots in the market, you're probably wondering which one to choose. And nobody better than the most complete web of the sector of robotic aspiration to guide you in the best way, and that you can choose correctly.
