The employee of the Michigan pizzeria makes & # 039; epic & # 039; Delivery for terminally ill man almost 500 miles away

Talk about service.

An employee of the pizzeria in Michigan did everything possible to give a couple of cakes to a man fighting cancer.

When Julie and Rich Morgan lived in Battle Creek 25 years ago, Rich always took Steve's pizza home for dinner every day, although money was scarce. Since then, the couple has moved to Indianapolis, but those pizzas, the taste and the memories, have stayed with them.

In fact, the Morgans had planned to visit Battle Creek and Steve's Pizza for a weekend getaway. But after a trip to the emergency room, their plans changed; Rich is now at home with palliative care as his battle against cancer ends, Julie said in a post on Facebook.

Knowing how much that pizzeria meant for the couple, Julie's dad called Steve's Pizza to see if someone could send a card or a text message to encourage them. But Dalton Shaffer, a manager, had a different idea.

"Well, what kind of pizza do you like?" Shaffer asked Julie Morgan's father, according to MLive.com.

His father quickly tried to clarify that he was calling from Indianapolis, almost 200 miles away and in a different state. Shaffer, 18, said he understood and promised to make the special delivery of two pizzas of 16-inch sausages and mushrooms as soon as the restaurant closed just after 10 p.m.

"And so, while Rich and I were sleeping, at 2:30 a.m., Dalton entered our driveway, left the car running and gave two special pizzas to my family," Julie said. "He told them we were in their prayers and offered to help in any way he could."

Julie said that Shaffer also rejected an offer from the family to lodge him in a hotel. He also left immediately, she said, so he could get home in time to go to work in the morning.

Shaffer is the nephew of the owner of Steve's Pizza and has been working in the restaurant for about two years, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer.

"I just wanted to do that for them," he told the newspaper. "I just wanted to make you happy."

He added that he did not plan to tell anyone about his out-of-state trip, including his uncle.

"I just hope that people can keep that family in mind and pray for them," Shaffer said.

"I am more than overwhelmed by this act of genuine kindness," said Julie Morgan. "Dalton brought our family a lot of joy, and the best pizza in the world, at a really difficult time. While 'thank you' hardly seems right, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Dalton from Steve's Pizza in Battle Creek, MI, for making your pizza delivery in the middle of the night.

In total, Shaffer traveled around 450 miles back and forth to deliver. But this is what makes it even more "epic": Steve's Pizza does not even offer delivery services.
