The derailment of a Taiwanese passenger train kills at least 17
A Taiwanese passenger train derailed Sunday afternoon, killing at least 17 and wounding 120, the island bureau said.
The Taiwan Railway Administration said in a statement posted on its website that an express train traveling south from the Shulin district in New Taipei City to Taidong City jumped on the tracks just before 5 p.m. local time. Reports from the Taiwan Central News Agency said the accident occurred in Yilan County, in the northeast of the island.
The train was carrying 366 people at the time of the accident, the railway office said. The Central News Agency said that five of the eight train carriages had left the track.
The photos and video published by CNA and by witnesses on Facebook show the train's white and red wagons deployed in a zigzag pattern along a curve in the track. The cause of the derailment was not immediately clear.
Taiwanese passenger trains have been derailed before, although it is rare that such incidents cause serious injury or death. Sunday's accident comes almost a year after another express train on the same line derailed while traveling in the opposite direction. In that case, no one was seriously injured.
