The dead whale washed ashore on Cape Cod, was famous in the area

A well-known fin whale measuring 54 feet long died on the coast of Cape Cod last week, environmental officials said.

The whale, known as "Stairs" due to the scars on its dorsal fin, was first documented in a 1985 sighting, according to a Facebook post by the Center for Coastal Studies.

The corpse, which had been floating face down and celebrated by sharks, was seen in the water on October 14 and diverted until it reached the coast days later in Provincetown, located at the tip of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Times reported.

The stairs had been seen in the waters near Cape Cod for decades.

"It is an animal that is much more than a little familiar," said John Conlon, first officer and field guide for Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch. "I started the business in 1983. I have been observing this particular whale since 1984."

A team from the Center for Coastal Studies and the International Fund for Animal Welfare went to examine the whale for a necropsy. It may take several months before the results are available.

His dorsal fin was found fractured, but it was not determined if that happened before or after his death, said Kristy Volker of the IFAW.

Ladders is one of the 600 documented fin whales identified by the center since 1979. Fin whales are classified as endangered species according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. UU

They are among the largest animals on earth, second only to blue whales, said the center.
