The Curiosity robot reactivates its first "brain"

NASA engineers have ordered the Curiosity robot of the US space agency to use an alternative computer to which it had been employing lately. The change will allow engineers to make a detailed diagnosis of a technical problem that has prevented the computer that until then was active the storage of scientific information and some fundamental engineering data since last September 15.

Like many NASA spacecraft, the Curiosity was designed with redundant computers, in this case, the so-called Side-A and Side-B (Side-A and Side-B), so that, if one experiences a failure, it can continue operations with the other. After reviewing several options, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) engineers recommended that the rover switch to using the Side-A computer, which it initially used after landing on Mars in 2012.

The robot continues to send a limited amount of engineering data stored in the short-term memory when it is connected to a repeater orbiter. Apart from that, it is in good condition and receives orders. But whatever it is that is preventing the Curiosity from storing scientific data in long-term memory is also preventing the storage of vehicle event records, a journal of all its actions that engineers need to be able to make a diagnosis. The relay of the computer will allow data and records to be stored in the other.

Side-A experienced hardware and software problems more than five years ago, leaving the robot unable to receive orders and running out of battery power. At that moment, the team managed to switch to the Side-B computer. Since then, the engineers have diagnosed the problem and quarantined the part of the A-side memory that was affected, so that the computer is available again to work on the mission.

In the days before the release of the Side-B computer by Side-A, the latter was made many checks and was prepared for the change. "It's certainly possible to run the mission on the Side-A computer if we really need it, but our plan is to go back to Side-B as soon as we can fix the problem, to use its larger memory size," explains Steven Lee, of JPL.
