The conservation of the Amazon rainforest is negatively affecting the Brazilian Cerrado
A new investigation led by the University of Michigan (United States) suggests that the protection of the Amazonian forest from deforestation could be leading to damage to another "neighboring" ecosystem, the Brazilian Cerrado. And the involuntary consequences could be profound.
Efforts to stop agricultural activities in the Amazon have achieved an 80 percent reduction in the destruction of this forest, from the beginning of 2000 to 2015. However, the work published in the Journal of Geographic Sciences, shows that agriculture and livestock have caused 6.6 more destruction of vegetation in the State of Tocantins, in the Cerrado, located in the center of Brazil.
"We are not saying that reducing the destruction of the Amazon rainforest should not receive attention," stresses Yue Dou, a researcher at the University of Michigan, but "we must pay attention to the great destruction of another area that also has significant biodiversity "
The Cerrado is a Brazilian savanna of varied wooded pastures that cover more than 20 percent of the country. While the Amazon has great appeal and provokes international fascination, the Cerrado does not get the same attention. Although both areas have been cultivated aggressively. The prohibition of the purchase of soybeans cultivated in the Amazon of 2006 and of beef raised on these lands since 2009 greatly reduced deforestation.

However, the destruction of the Cerrado increased as soy farmers and ranchers sought new places to produce these highly demanded foods. In the state of Tocantins alone, conversion to agricultural land increased from 465 square miles to 3,067 square miles from 2007 to 2015, according to information from Michigan State University collected by DiCYT.
The reasons behind the hidden impacts are complex and can be difficult to understand, so it is difficult to realize that success in one part of the country can cause setbacks in a neighboring area. Colonization, road construction, infrastructure or efficiency in law enforcement are among the many factors that reduce natural vegetation. (Source: CGP / DICYT)
