China launched on October 29 an Earth observation satellite that will be jointly managed with France. The so-called CFOSAT (Chinese-French Oceanography Satellite), or Zhongfa Haiyang W., will have an oceanographic mission: it will study the winds on the surface of the seas, the waves and other phenomena that occur in the oceans.



The CFOSAT was built by the Chinese organization CAST on a CAST2000 platform. He weighed some 600 kg at take-off and carried two radars, the SWIM, provided by the French CNES, and the SCAT, developed by the Chinese CNSA.



The mission began at 00:43 UTC, from the base of Jiuquan, and culminated with the placement of the main cargo in a heliosynchronous circular orbit of about 520 km altitude. The satellite is expected to operate for at least 3 years.

The rocket used, a CZ-2C, also carried seven secondary loads, all of them small cubesats. They are Chinese satellites, less a cubesat, the CubeBel-1, which belongs to Belarus.
