The coastal community of Mexico Beach, Florida, was demolished by Hurricane Michael - but the newly built concrete house of a family survived virtually intact.

"Hurricanes happen, so we try to build it to survive" and move on from generation to generation, Dr. Lebron Lackey told ABC News about the vacation home he built last year with his uncle.
When Michael came ashore in Category 4 on Wednesday in Mexico Beach with winds of around 155 mph, Lackey was at home in Tennessee, "nauseated" while watching the security camera of the house, watching images of the winds and debris.

Rescue personnel conduct a search after Hurricane Michael in Mexico Beach, Florida, on October 11, 2018.
Lackey did not trust the house to survive, fearing he would lose the roof at any moment.
"I was looking at the corner of the roof like an airplane wing, and I was watching the air go by with debris about the speed that you would expect to see on an airplane," he said.
For Lackey and his uncle, the goal during construction last year was to go "overboard to preserve the structure." He said they often went the extra mile to add more concrete, especially at the corners.
Making minor adjustments as they went along, he said they often "went a step further" on building codes, such as when they added 1-foot-thick concrete walls and steel cables to keep the roof steady.
They also built the ground floor from tall piles, with the house elevated above it, to create a ground floor structure destined to yield with a storm surge if necessary, and "enough," he said.
Lackey said he only felt that the house was vulnerable in the corner of the roof for an "airplane wing effect."

Lackey said the additions were not very expensive and described them as "totally valuable."
For others looking to build their dream home on the beach, Lackey recommends studying "the environment you are in and taking what you hear and expect to be worse than that, and if you want it to last, change it over and beyond. "
"I'm a fan of concrete construction," he added.
Although Lackey's family home is firmly in the sand, it is surrounded by destruction.
