The army has big plans for a light, fast and deadly super tank. Here is what we know so far.

Could there be a light armored attack vehicle capable of crossing bridges, deploy quickly from the air, detect enemies at very long distances, control nearby robots and fire the most advanced weapons in the world, while maintaining protection and survival without precedents of an Abrams tank?

These questions form the main basis of the Army's rigorous analysis and exploration of exactly what a future tank should look like. The issue is to quickly take on greater urgency as potential adversaries continue to present very serious and technologically advanced weapons and attack platforms.

"I think a complete replacement of the Abrams would not make sense, unless we had a breakthrough ... with a much lighter armor that allows us to redesign the vehicle," Colonel Jim Schirmer, Program Manager for Combat of the Next Generation Vehicle, told reporters at the Association of the Annual Symposium of the United States Army.

At present, the Army is analyzing a series of possibilities, most of which are in the balance of how quickly certain technologies can mature.

Schirmer explained that new lightweight armor compounds or active protection systems may not evolve fast enough to cope with the most advanced emerging threats.

While many Army weapons developers often acknowledge that there are limitations to how much an Abrams tank can be upgraded in the 1980s, the platform has made great strides in technological sophistication and combat technology.

"Until technology matures, we're going to mature the Abrams platform," said Schirmer. We would need an APS that could defeat the long bar penetrators (kinetic energy armor penetration weapons), which could allow us to go lighter, "said Schirmer.

An essay by the Institute for Defense Analysis 2014, entitled "M1 Abrams, Today and Tomorrow," reinforces Schirmer's point by detailing the rapid evolution of advanced anti-tank weapons that pierce armor. The research notes that, for example, hybrid forces like Hezbollah had some success against Israeli Merkava tanks in 2006.

Therefore, GD and the Army developers continue to improve the Abrams and look for innovations that will allow the Abrams to address these types of evolving threats, such as the long-range kinetic energy penetration rods mentioned by Schirmer; One of the key areas of emphasis for this would be to develop a more expansive Active Protection System, capable of eliminating a much wider range of attack possibilities, beyond RPGs and certain Guided Missiles against Tanks.

The essay continues to emphasize that the armored main battle tank offers incomparable advantages for combat, in part by offering powerful ground attack options in threat environments where advanced air defenses could hamper the operation of air assets.

Using computer algorithms, fire control technology, sensors and an interceptor of some kind, active protection systems are designed to detect, track and destroy incoming enemy fire in a matter of milliseconds. Many Abrams tanks are already equipped with a system known as a "Trophy" that tracks and eliminates incoming enemy fire.

A next generation APS technology that can eliminate the most sophisticated enemy threats could allow the Army to design a much lighter weight tank while maintaining the necessary protection.

For these and other reasons, Abram's attack, armor and weapons technology proven in combat will be extremely difficult to replicate or combine into a new platform. In addition, the current Abrams is almost a completely new platform these days, in light of how much it has been updated to address modern combat challenges.

In short, regardless of the future path the Army takes, the Abrams will not go anywhere in the next few years. In fact, the Army and General Dynamics Land Systems have already designed and delivered a new and improved M1A2 SEP v3 Abrams. At the same time, service and industry developers are making progress with an even more advanced v4 model, which offers a massive "lethality update".

This being the case, when it comes to a future tank platform, all options are still on the table.

Abrams will be there for some time. We finance ourselves from v3 to v4, but there is a thought in mind that we may have to change gears, "said David Marck, program manager for the main battle tank, to a small group of reporters at the Association of The United States Annual Army Symposium "I have no requirements for a replacement tank."

As a result, some of the details, technologies and applications for v4 are still in process.

"The army has to make some decisions. "The v4 will be an improved v3 with the third generation of FLIR, or the Army will remove the turret and build an autoloader, will it reduce the size of the crew?" Michael Peck, Business Development Manager, GDLS, told Warrior Maven in an interview.

In addition, work in progress on NGCV could, to a large extent, be integrated with the Abrams v4 scan, Peck explained. GD is preparing options to present the Army for information, such as options that use a lighter chassis with interchangeable elements, such as different turrets or an automatic loader, depending on the threat.
