NEW YORK (Reuters) - Twenty people were killed in rural New York when a limousine collided with another vehicle, New York state police said on Sunday.
The accident occurred just before 2 pm Saturday afternoon in Schoharie, approximately 38 miles (61 km) west of Albany, on Route 30. The limousine accelerated through an intersection and led to a parking lot outside of an Apple Barrel Country Store, hitting a vehicle and Two pedestrians.
All passengers in the limousine died, as well as the driver and pedestrians, state police said. Local media reported that the limousine was carrying a wedding party.
It was the deadliest transport accident in the United States since a plane crash in 2009 in Buffalo, New York, which killed 49 people, said the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, Robert Sumwalt.
The victims were transferred to the Albany Medical Center, where autopsies will be performed.
The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, issued a statement on Sunday thanking the first respondents for working on the scene throughout the night.
"My heart is broken by the 20 people who lost their lives in this horrible accident on Saturday in Schoharie," said Cuomo.
The Apple Barrel Country Store, the scene of the accident, posted a message of sympathy on Facebook.
"Our hearts and prayers are with everyone who was affected by today's events," the post said.
