The AbbVie drug for rheumatoid arthritis is successful in a late-stage trial





NEW YORK (Reuters) - AbbVie Inc. said on Tuesday that its experimental treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) showed a significant improvement in physical function, pain and quality of life compared to the generic drug commonly prescribed methotrexate in a Advanced stage clinical trial.

The US drug maker expects the drug, upadacitinib, to help replace the lost income from its treatment for the best-selling RA, Humira, when it begins to face biosimilar competition in the United States in 2023. 

AbbVie said it will submit applications this year seeking regulatory approval for the drug. The first-line results of the Phase III study were previously announced in June. 

Upadacitinib belongs to a class of medications known as JAK inhibitors, which block the inflammation-causing enzymes called Janus kinases. Xeljanz from Pfizer Inc. belongs to the same class of medications. 

AbbVie said that after 14 weeks of treatment, 69 percent of patients who received a 30-milligram dose of the medication and 65 percent of patients who received a 15-mg dose reported improvements in physical function. That compares with improvements reported in 45 percent of patients receiving methotrexate, which is often the first medication prescribed for RA patients.  

He said that 75 percent of the patients who received the 30-mg dose of the medication and 64 percent of the patients who received the lowest dose said they had less pain. That compared to 46 percent of patients receiving methotrexate. 

In addition, 73 percent of patients who received the highest dose of upadacitinib and 65 percent of those who received the lowest dose reported improvements in quality of life compared to 48 percent methotrexate. 

Humira, the best-selling prescription drug in the world with sales expected to reach $ 20 billion this year, began to face competition from biosimilar versions in Europe last week.
