(Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) lost the weekly production target of Model 3 on Tuesday and said it faced a 40 percent import duty in China due to the ongoing trade war between the United States and China.

The electric car maker said it was speeding up the construction of its Shanghai factory while seeking to combat high rates.

Tesla produced more than 5,300 Model 3 cars in the last week of September, without reaching its goal of 6,000. 

Overall, in the third quarter, the company produced 53,239 of the cars in the third quarter, in line with its goal of 50,000 to 55,000 models 3, and delivered 55,404 of the vehicles to customers. 

The company's shares rose almost 2 percent, $ 316.79 in operations before the bell. 

The Model 3 sedan is key to the growth and profit plans of the losing company and supports its goal of eventually becoming a mass production automaker. 

"With stabilized production, delivery and logistics of the outgoing vehicle were our main challenges during the third quarter," the company said in a statement. 

Tesla met for the first time with a long-standing goal of 5,000 vehicles per week at the end of June, after a series of bottlenecks and production delays. Since then, the company has endeavored to maintain and increase that level. 

Including its model S and X vehicles, Tesla produced a total of 80,142 vehicles in the quarter and delivered 83,500. 

Tesla has said it will deliver around 100,000 S and X model vehicles in 2018.
