While the pressure of the demonstrations seemed to work on Flake, McConnell promised on Wednesday that the senators will not be "intimidated by these people."
Tensions between party leaders have also been increasing. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, on Wednesday, almost called McConnell a liar from the floor, which would mark a violation of custom. Schumer disagreed with McConnell blaming the Democrats for the delay in voting for Kavanaugh, calling it "the most brazen falsehood I've heard on this floor in a long time."
McConnell has accused the Democrats of working to delay the nomination at any cost. Schumer said that McConnell, as the majority leader, schedules the votes.
"I'm very tempted to use the word L but it's my friend," said Schumer of McConnell.
McConnell has repeatedly said the Senate will vote for Kavanaugh's nomination this week. It is not clear when McConnell will take steps to make that happen, although he will have to "file the cloture" on Wednesday to trigger a procedural vote on Friday and a final confirmation vote on Saturday.
Affecting the vote could be the finalization of the FBI report, which could arrive as early as Wednesday. Fox News has learned from two main sources in the Senate that the report is not expected to be published publicly: the FBI is expected to send a single copy of the supplemental report on Kavanaugh to the hill, where it will be kept in a safe in the Senate Committee Judicial. All 100 senators and nine staff members will be authorized to read it.
Meanwhile, President Trump speeded things up with his criticism of the sexual assault allegations made against Kavanaugh by accuser Christine Blasey Ford during a rally in Mississippi on Tuesday night.
The president, before a campaign crowd, mentioned the holes in Ford's history, portraying the round trip between Ford and his interviewers during the Congress hearing last week.
