Suiting Up for 'First Man': Ryan Gosling Digs His Authentic NASA Spacesuits

From his career as a test pilot to his famous first steps on the moon, Neil Armstrong He put on all kinds of interesting outfits at work. While filming Armstrong's new biopic "First Man," lead actor Ryan Gosling looked and felt like the real Neil while wearing some of the astronaut's most iconic outfits.

In an interview at the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Gosling told reporters he had "a lot of appreciation and admiration for the costumes themselves and the way they were made." When the real NASA astronauts were on the set, he said they all gave the authentic-looking space suit replicas "the seal of approval ... and that felt good."

Using archival images from a NASA database, costume designer Mary Zophres said she "was able to research exactly what the astronauts were carrying at any given time," according to a statement from Universal Pictures, the studio behind the film. "The NASA database is like a treasure trove of information," said Zophres. "We went from X-15 to Gemini V to Gemini VIII to Apollo 1 and then to Apollo 11. As the space program progressed, the documentation became more and more intense as the country got closer to Apollo 11, they documented it more. " thoroughly."

The film begins with a nail biting scene that represents a time when Armstrong was about to come to an end during a test flight in 1962 of the X-15 experimental plane. At Movie trailer above (from the 30-second mark), you can see Gosling's fight at Armstrong to gain control of the plane as it descends back to Earth from an altitude of more than 207,000 feet (63 kilometers). That's about two-thirds of the way to the edge of space. In this scene, Gosling is wearing a loose metallic suit.

This bright garment is "basically a loose bag in the shape of a human with rings on the wrists and neck to hold the gloves and helmet," NASA officials he said in a statement. "If the cockpit is depressurized, the suit is inflated to maintain a safe atmospheric pressure around the occupant until the aircraft has reached an altitude low enough for the suit to deflate."

When Armstrong launched his first space flight in 1966, the Gemini 8 meeting in orbit and docking mission that almost killed him (again): he was wearing a slightly modified version of the X-15 pressure suit known as the G4C.

These flexible space suits are made of nylon and are better insulated to protect against extreme temperatures in space. This was the same space suit used by NASA astronaut Ed White during the first United States spacewalk. In "First Man," Gosling and Christopher Abbott, who plays NASA astronaut and Gemini 8 pilot Dave Scott, both wear these Gemini space suits.

Last, but certainly not least, Gosling slipped into the iconic Apollo 11 space suit. Officially known as Extravehicular mobility unit (EMU), this voluminous white suit allows astronauts to spend long periods of time outside their spaceship. Armstrong used one to walk on the moon. EMUs serve as portable life support systems, while previous space suits required the astronaut to be tied to a spaceship.

Gosling used a carefully designed replica of the Apollo 11 space suit for the film, and the suit that Armstrong was currently wearing located in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
