Two decades ago, molding was considered the only cost-effective way to manufacture mass products. Today, 3D metal printers are a worthy competitor to metallurgical methods. 3D printers have the opportunity to replace traditional methods of metallurgical production in the future. 3D printing provides a whole series of benefits, from the creation of more complicated designs to a cheaper cost of technology.



Currently, there are several technologies that are used to print metal. The two main ones involve the gradual overlapping, layer by layer, of an "ink" of metallic powder, to build the desired figure with volume, and use a powerful laser beam (up to 500 watts).



Titanium is the optimal metal with which to manufacture products in various industrial fields, but nevertheless it can not be used in 3D printing due to the danger of fire and explosion of powders.



Aluminum is an alternative, being light and moldable. However, by itself it is not robust enough.

The team of Alexander Gromov, of the Russian National University of Science and Technology (MISiS) in Moscow, has devised a technique to strengthen aluminum in 3D printing of it.



The new technique is able to double the strength of composite materials obtained by 3D printing from aluminum powder, as well as improving the characteristics of these products, making them similar in various aspects to those of titanium alloys.
