Spanish researchers achieve that women with precocious menopause can get pregnant
A team from the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (Catalunya, Spain), led by Francesc Fàbregues and Francisco Carmona, has managed to get a woman with symptoms of advanced menopause to become pregnant and give birth to a healthy baby.
The specialists used a pioneering technique that consists of performing a laparoscopy to then remove part of the patient's ovarian cortex. Subsequently, this tissue is fragmented and reinserted into the contralateral ovary (on the opposite side) of the patient.
After the intervention, the woman is hormonally stimulated for a few weeks to generate oocytes and then fertilize them in vitro.
Twelve women with symptoms of advanced menopause participated in the study. Of these, six have managed to have ovarian activity after the intervention.
It must be borne in mind that a woman undergoes early menopause when she is born with a smaller reserve of ovarian follicles or when, for various reasons, the follicles are consumed faster than usual. A woman is considered to suffer advanced menopause when she has symptoms before age 40.
Throughout the 30 or 40 years of her fertile life, all her follicles are exhausted and the woman enters menopause without reservations. Therefore, when the ovaries stop working, it no longer produces sex hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, and stops ovulating.

In addition to suffering the typical symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal sequences and mood swings, many women who experience early menopause may have significant emotional problems.
Already in 2013, Japanese experts applied ovarian tissue activation in patients with premature ovarian failure and, so far, three pregnancies have already been registered with their technique. The difference with the Hospital Clinic method is in the need to perform two laparoscopies, while in the case of Barcelona one is used.
In addition, in this latest success, the treatment of ovarian tissue does not need a pharmacological process so the new technology is much cheaper and more agile than its predecessor.
Laparoscopy is a technique that allows to see inside the pelvic cavity thanks to optical devices, which are introduced into the patient through small incisions in the abdominal wall.
Through one of these cuts, the optical fiber is transmitted to the light that illuminates the cavity and through the camera connected to the lens, it is possible to observe the interior. (Source: Hospital Clínic)
