Spain's maritime rescue service says a baby died despite efforts by rescuers to save him after a small boat carrying migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea. The death occurred when more than 500 people were rescued.
The service says on Sunday that the bottom of the rubber boat ran out, throwing 56 migrants into the water when their rescue boat arrived on Saturday east of the Strait of Gibraltar. The rescue workers were able to save 55 men, women and children, but they could not resuscitate the baby.
In total, Spanish rescuers saved 520 people trying to cross from North Africa to Spain on Saturday. In addition, a boat with 70 immigrants arrived in the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
More than 1,960 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe this year.
