SpaceX Aces First-Ever Rocket Landing in California After Spectacular Satellite Launch
SpaceX inaugurated its rocket landing platform on the west coast in style.
A Rocket Falcon 9 with a first pre-flight stage launched from California Vandenberg Air Force Base tonight (October 7) at 10:21 p.m. EDT (7:21 p.m. local time; 0221 GMT on October 8), which successfully delivered the Earth observation satellite SAOCOM-1A from Argentina to the orbit.
And, less than 8 minutes after takeoff, the first stage of reinforcement. He returned to Earth for a timely annotation. in SpaceX's Vandenberg landing zone, just 400 meters from its launch pad.
"This is great news for everyone here at SpaceX," said Tom Praderio, a SpaceX firmware engineer, during the live launch of tonight's commentary. "We are all very excited."
The twilight launch created a spectacular view in the night sky for spectators from Southern California, who went on Twitter to share their amazing photos. One of those spectators was the mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti.
No, they are definitely not extraterrestrials.

"No, they are definitely not extraterrestrials" Garcetti wrote on Twitter as he posted an amazing photo. "What you're seeing is the first launch and landing of the @SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on the West Coast, the rocket took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 7:21 p.m. and landed safely on Earth."
SpaceX had already achieved more than two dozen landings in the first stage during orbital surveys, with reinforcements in robotics "unmanned boats"parked in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and on the mainland at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, but tonight's event marked the first land landing of SpaceX on the West Coast.
Such landings are part of SpaceX's drive to develop rockets and spacecraft that are fully reusable and quickly, an advance that the founder and CEO of the company, Elon Musk, said could reduce the cost of space flights enough to make great feats of exploration as the settlement of Mars economically feasible.
According to that vision, tonight marked the second flight for this first stage of Falcon 9 in particular, which also helped the commercial communications satellites of Irandium Next of loft 10 of Vandenberg on July 25.

By the way: SpaceX would like to land each reinforcement on solid ground, to facilitate the reflection process. But that is possible only when relatively light charges are thrown into not so distant orbits; In other missions, there is not enough fuel left for the first stage of Falcon 9 to maneuver all the way back to ground.
SpaceX calls its landing site in California Landing Zone 4, probably because it is part of Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex 4 (SLC-4). This facility, which SpaceX leases from the Air Force, used to feature two launch platforms, known as SLC-4 East and SLC-4 West. SpaceX has turned the west into a landing site and launches Falcon 9s from the east. (The company has two contact sites in Cabo Cañaveral, which are called Landing Zone 1 and Landing Zone 2).

The 3,500 pounds. (1,600 kilograms) The SAOCOM-1A satellite was developed by the Argentine national space agency, known by its Spanish acronym CONAE. The spacecraft will be installed 385 miles (620 kilometers) above the Earth and will examine the planet using a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument.
The radar measurements of SAOCOM-1A will be track soil moisture levels, thus helping to forecast crop yields. The mission will also help planners and emergency management officials control forest fires, floods and other disasters.
The satellite twin, SAOCOM-1B, will also be launched in a Falcon 9; Its launch is scheduled for next year. Both ships will make similar observations from orbit, which will be integrated with measurements made by a network of Italian satellites.
"SAOCOM-1, together with the Italian constellation COSMO-SkyMed X-Band SAR, comprises the Italian-Argentine Satellite System for Emergency Management (SIASGE), an association between CONAE and the Italian Space Agency (ASI)," officials from SpaceX wrote in a description of the mission. "Flying both constellations along the same orbit allows a quick response by providing SAR information in emergency situations."
"SAOCOM" is the abbreviation of "Argentine Satellite of Observation with Microwaves", which in Spanish means "Argentine Satellite of Observation of Microwaves".
