Social networks are illuminated with the launch of the SpaceX satellite
When Espaciox He launched a rocket carrying an Argentine satellite of Earth observation from California, both the night sky and social networks lit up.
People as far away as Phoenix and Sacramento published photos of the launch and return of the Falcon 9 rocket on Sunday night. It was the first time that SpaceX got a first-stage reinforcement at its launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base, about 130 miles (209 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles.
The Air Force warned residents on the central coast of California that they could see multiple motor burns in the first stage and hear one or more sonic explosions as they returned.
But many were taken by surprise when the launch illuminated the sky, wondering what the vision of the other world would look like. Some speculated that it was a comet or an alien plane.
"Something exploded in the sky west of Phoenix," Laura Gadbery wrote in Twitter. "Did someone catch you or know what it was?"
Lloyd Lawrence, another user in Phoenix, more than 530 miles (853 kilometers) away from the launch site, said he was driving on Interstate 10 when he saw the launch and "could not believe what I was seeing."
"I wondered who held the giant lantern in the sky," he wrote.
Californians from Los Angeles to Sacramento, more than 340 miles (547 kilometers) from the launch site, also posted their confusion.
The mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, was among those who tried to clarify the speculation, published a photo of the launch and wrote: "No, they are definitely not extraterrestrial."
Those who knew they were watching a satellite launch posted videos that they captured of the impressive show, including one over the downtown Los Angeles skyline and a time lapse from Kern County.
The main objective of the SpaceX mission was to place the SAOCOM 1A satellite in orbit, but SpaceX also wanted to expand its recovery from the early stages to its launch site at Vandenberg.
SpaceX had previously flown rockets to ground after the Florida launches, but had not done so on the west coast.
SpaceX has also successfully landed the first stages of Falcon 9 on so-called drone ships off the coast of Florida and California, all as part of its effort to reduce the cost of space launches by reusing rockets instead of allow them to fall into the ocean.
The satellite is the first of two for the Argentine space agency, the National Space Activities Commission, and will work in conjunction with a constellation of satellites from the Italian space agency. Its acronym is the abbreviation of Argentine Satellite of Observation with Microwaves.
The SAOCOM 1A carries a high-resolution instrument called synthetic apposition radar that will be used for emergency management during disasters and for monitoring the earth. The second satellite will be SAOCOM 1B.
