(Reuters) - The decision of pop music luminary Taylor Swift to get involved in electoral politics for the first time on Sunday has prompted an increase in voter registration online, particularly among young people, according to the website Vote.org .

The nonprofit site, which helps people register online, reported 240,000 new records since Swift posted a message on Instagram supporting two Democratic candidates in his home state of Tennessee and urging people to register. 

By comparison, the site recorded 57,000 new registrations in all of August and 190,000 last month. About 102,000 of the registrations since Sunday were among voters between 18 and 29, an increase that, according to the site, was probably motivated by Swift's publication. 

    Vote.org recognized that it was not possible to measure the direct impact of the Swift movement. 

"But one thing is clear, we are seeing a massive increase in voters 18-24 and 25-29," the site said in a statement. 

The huge reach of Swift, which has 112 million followers on Instagram and 84 million followers on Twitter, underscores the way celebrities can take advantage of their online presence by instantly sending messages to their millions of followers.  

The deadline to register is Tuesday in Tennessee and in more than a dozen other states. 

Swift was scheduled to open the 2018 American Music Awards on Tuesday night with his first show in nearly three years, the program announced. She will perform "I Did Something Bad" from her multi-platinum album, "Reputation".  

Polls show that the United States Senate contest between Democrat Phil Bredesen and Republican Marsha Blackburn, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, is virtually tied in a state that Trump won by 16 points in 2016. 

Swift, who has largely avoided politics even when she has become one of the world's great pop superstars, told her supporters that she could not support Blackburn because of the congresswoman's track record on women's issues and rights. Homosexuals 

"In the past I have been reluctant to publicly express my political opinions, but due to various events in my life and in the world over the past two years, I feel very different for that now," wrote Swift, who is careful to control your public image

Many celebrities identify themselves as liberal, and Democrat Hillary Clinton enjoyed broad support from actors, musicians and other popular figures in 2016. 

The most notable celebrity to support Trump may be rapper Kanye West, who was invited to lunch with the president at the White House on Thursday. 

West and Swift got involved in a fight for years after West interrupted Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards to question why he had won.
