The NHL had been in 30 teams since 2000, when it decided in 2016 to expand to Las Vegas. The Golden Knights started playing a year ago and made an exciting race towards the Stanley Cup Final in its inaugural season.
That process began with a season trip that the league approved in the winter of 2014 to see if Las Vegas would be a viable hockey market. "This is not about (one) year, this is forever," Bonderman said. "This is a long-term partnership with the city and the long-term problems, and you will not be overwhelmed by some short-term problems."
Leiweke, who along with his brother Tim spearheads the effort, was careful to say that the group is not assuming that a team is made. The presentation was the last and most important sales job, and now the league must take the next step.
"It's the NHL that controls this process," Leiweke said. "We're not presumptuous, we're not going to be in front of them and we're not going to declare an early victory, we're going to wait and be patient and be completely respectful, it's been a long time to come, and we can be patient."
