Rochelle Ritchie blames Trump for the threats of Cesar Sayoc and Twitter for not ending them

SAN FRANCISCO: Two weeks before Cesar Sayoc allegedly sent bombs to Democrats across the country, political commentator Rochelle Ritchie says she complained to Twitter about threats she made against her, including threatening messages and disturbing images such as alligators and parties. of the human body. of his appearances on Fox News.

One of the tweets from the Sayoc account said: "We will see each other safe." Embrace your loved ones every time you leave home. "Ritchie says that Twitter informed him that Sayoc's tweets did not violate the company's rules.

So Ritchie, 36, a former press secretary for Democrats in the House of Representatives, says she was surprised on Friday when she learned that the man she had denounced for threatening her was suspected of sending fake bombs to at least a dozen. of Democrats and other critics of President Trump. And then, she said, she got "very, very angry."

"He had informed Twitter and they did absolutely nothing about it," he told USA TODAY. "What is abusive behavior? Do I have to find myself floating in the Everglades so that this is taken seriously? Does a bomb have to explode so that this is taken seriously?"

Twitter downed Sayoc's Twitter account on Friday night. The social media company declined to comment on Ritchie's complaint, other than saying in an e-mailed statement: "This is an investigation of the law in progress. We do not have a comment."

Ritchie, who appears regularly on cable TV shows, tells the US. UU TODAY that the threatening tweets occurred after she tweeted from the green room before appearing on Fox News on October 2 and nine days after making some comments on Twitter about President Donald Trump. and the rapper Kanye West. In her line of work, Ritchie says she is used to receiving unpleasant comments after commenting on conservative networks.

"Whether someone calls me the N-word or the bitch, I let them fall from my back, but this one was a bit different," he said. "Then I answered him and said: 'Threatening my life is a bad idea.'"

Ritchie reported on Sayoc's threats to Twitter, hoping that his account with username @ hardrock2016 would close or at least be suspended. That same day, Twitter rejected it.

He blocked Sayoc's account and forgot it until about an hour after Savoc was arrested on Friday. That's when Ritchie said he noticed that his Twitter "exploded" while he was at work.

"Some of the people who followed me were like, 'Wow, Rochelle, you have to report this, this was the guy who was arrested by the FBI for sending all those bombs,' said Ritchie, who unlocked the Sayoc account to confirm it was the same person

Twitter has been under fire for years for allowing a torrent of abusive behavior. Again and again, he has promised an offensive, but the complaints come daily.

According to the terms of service of Twitter, "specific threats of violence or desire for serious physical harm, death or illness of an individual or group of people" are not allowed. But "vague threats" or "wishing or expecting someone to experience serious physical harm" does not violate company rules.

"Outside of all social networking services, Twitter is the worst in terms of political division," said Ritchie, who blames Twitter for not protecting its users from online threats.

On Friday night he received a notification From Twitter that investigated and suspended the Sayoc account. "Oh, so it was a mistake, just stop!" she tweeted

While Twitter gives threats a platform, Ritchie also blames President Trump, who says he has created a tense political climate in which his supporters feel emboldened to act on their worst impulses.

"If I, as a former press secretary of Congress, can try to have some kind of responsible rhetoric when I go to conservative television or leftist networks, if I can frame my comments so that it does not create a hostile or volatile situation, then the president should be able to do the same, "Ritchie told USA TODAY TODAY. "Unfortunately, he does not have the same set of skills and this is where we are now, where these people think this is fine and it is not quite right."

Asked about his rhetoric on Friday, President Trump said he had toned it down. "It could really improve the tone, because the media (...) have been incredibly unfair to Republicans and certainly to me," he said.

Ritchie, who has just returned from a trip abroad, says she has not found anything suspicious in her mailbox, but that she worries about herself and other people whose mail is not checked by the Secret Service.

"It's not right to threaten anyone's life, whether it's our current president or our former president or members of Congress, but the difference between people like that and people like me, commentators who come on television, both Republicans and Democrats, is that we do not do it". "We do not have the Secret Service checking our mail, we do not have staff checking our mail to make sure that the things we receive do not cause us any harm, we do not have that luxury," he said. "What people do not realize is that these packages end up in the hands of average Americans like me."
