- iPhone XS Max (from $ 1,100): the giant version of the XS with a 6.5-inch screen, the largest one so far on an iPhone.

- iPhone XR (starts at $ 750): the new model with a 6.1-inch screen. It seems that the XS models have a lower quality screen and fewer camera functions.
- iPhone 7 (starts at $ 450) and iPhone 8 (starts at $ 550): the oldest iPhone models with fingerprint sensors and thickest bezels.
Scan that list and you can not help but notice the $ 250 gap between XS and XR. The long-standing iPhone-nomics theory is that when one spends more, it gets proportionally more, but the XR challenges it.

Sure, there are some XR offsets, which include a lower contrast and resolution LCD screen and a single camera on the back. But I hardly noticed the differences in daily use. Actually, after using the XR, I think the XS has a greater commitment, that is, a shorter battery life. When weighing the two options, decide which features interest you the most. And keep in mind that, for most people, the "XS" means X ... S ... ive. Do not spend more for a psychological trick.
Which is the same
The XR, XS and XS Max are the technological equivalent of the fraternal triplets. They share the same designs of all the screens, the new A12 Bionic processors and the front camera systems to allow the unlocking of the phone with Face ID.
Face ID is faster and more reliable than the fingerprint scanner. If you are upgrading from an older model, you will get used to the lack of a start button in a short time, although it may take longer to get used to the notch at the top of the phone.
The iPhone XR comes with some compromises, but at $ 750, it represents the best value.

What is worse: screen
You really should look at the XS or XS Max OLED screen and the XR LCDs side by side to notice that the XS screens are sharper, have better contrast, deeper blacks and richer colors, even when it keeps them away From the axis. In everyday use, I rarely noticed the difference or spent the time thinking "Wow, I wish the text of this email was sharper" or "I wish the purple in this Lyft logo was a little brighter".
The iPhone XR and the XS Max are large phones, but the XR has a slightly wider frame and notch, despite the slightly smaller screen.

Two things on the screen that were harder to get used to: the slightly larger bezel around the screen and the lack of 3D Touch. It's true, I thought that 3D Touch was as useful as a pet rock when it was first introduced, but now it is the muscle memory to keep a button pressed in the Control Center to reach deeper configurations. Apple's 3D Touch replacement, called Haptic Touch, is more limited and was slow to respond to my presses.
The main reason why many will prefer the 5.8-inch screen of the XS? The manageable size. I prefer the XR screen to the big screen XS Max, but I'm still frustrated Apple has no more software features to take advantage of the additional space.
What is worse: the camera
The XR has the same wide-angle camera as the XS phones, but lacks the second telephoto lens for true optical zoom. Only once this week did that bother me: when I saw the evil squirrel I had been eating through the pumpkins on my front porch. I caught him with orange hands, but when I moved to take a picture, he slipped away.
The XS has two camera lenses, a wide-angle and a 2x telephoto lens to zoom in on. The XR only has a wide angle.

With just one camera, Apple still enables portrait mode, the setting that attempts to mimic SLR cameras by applying artificial blur around a subject. Instead of using the two cameras, Apple uses software tricks to try to distinguish the main theme from the background. It worked fine, but in some cases it looked fake and erased the wrong thing. And it does not work on animals.
The iPhone XR has vertical mode, but only works if it recognizes a human face.

No, there are no pictures of dogs, cats or, as I tried in the video above, professional looking, farm animals. As crazy as it sounds, this is really a deciding factor for me, as I take tons of photos of my son and my dog together. (However, I did confirm that the selfie camera in front will work for those shots of animal portraits). On the positive side, the low-light portrait shots on the XR were better than on the XS since the wide-angle camera allows more light.
What is better: battery and design
It's been a long time since I hit Apple for sacrificing battery life on behalf of phones that can work like razor blades. As a heavy user of smartphones:if I'm working on it"I recommend keeping This $ 35 Samsung wireless charger on your desktop, and leave your recent model iPhone while you work.
That's why I was surprised to discover that, thanks to its low resolution display and large battery, the XR has the longest battery life of any iPhone that has tested in recent memory.

I am, however, still angry that Apple included the same stupid five-watt charger that it has always included. Because of this, the XR charges slower than most Android phones.
The bright color options of the XR (it comes in six different shades) make it look like it belongs in a candy store, but the red version I've been trying is one of the best-looking Apple products I've used in years. Since it is made of glass, I would still stick a case.
On paper, the XS is a more premium product than the XR, but I do not know who I would recommend the XS. Well, maybe the artists of animal portraits and the obsessives of the screen. Any other person who is willing to spend up to $ 1,450 for the top-notch iPhone XS Max is putting the status on the substance.
