Review: The holographic phone RED Hydrogen One has potential, but is far from ready
http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsBaseball fans of the 1970s, no doubt, remember the Big Red Machine, the nickname at that time for the powerful Cincinnati Reds.
Unfortunately, what I call the Big RED Machine of smart phones, was launched during his first at-bat.
I refer to the expensive and highly ambitious Android phone "Hydrogen One" Holographic ", which Verizon and AT & T start selling on Friday, and that I had the opportunity to review before launching. As for size, this is a great smartphone , a robust aluminum rectangle with a 5.7-inch high-resolution screen and ribbed sides for easy grip.
The phone has a price tag of $ 1,295, and that's the first big hurdle right there. It can justify spending four digits for an iPhone XS Max or Samsung Galaxy Note9, but with RED, it would be delivering a small fortune for a potential not yet realized.
Plus: Does Apple's iPad still matter?
Plus: OnePlus 6T includes a fingerprint scanner on your screen to take on the iPhone XS, Google Pixel 3
In fact, as a front-line prospect in baseball, many of us have been anticipating the arrival of Hydrogen One, which is often delayed, for months. The hope has been that RED could offer a jolt of innovation to an industry that, despite all its robust updates of annual specifications and improvements to the camera, has been lacking in that department.
The hologram is not what you imagined
And the mere mention of holograms makes some people enthusiastic and evoke images in their minds that this product, frankly, does not comply.
In fact, you have to look at the RED phone to fully appreciate what RED has achieved and where it falls short. And because the technology may have piqued your interest, by all means, take a look at a Verizon or AT & T store.
For his part, RED founder Jim Jannard describes what you see as something between Princess Leia dancing from the table and the hologram on her credit card.
My evaluation is that the "4-View" technology, as RED calls it, is closer to seeing a 3D type screen in which the people and the characters of the videos and images show a sense of depth within the phone , even more than things jumping towards you. And there's no need to use those funky 3-D glasses to see the effect, which vaguely reminds one of a Nintendo 3DS.
As a company, RED seemed to have the pedigree to achieve something special. The RED cinematic cameras, which cost between $ 1,000 and $ 50,000, are widely used and loved by the creators of Hollywood. And the technology inside the Hydrogen One phones is taken from those cameras.
The need for content, and then something
But with the phone ready to go on sale, the failures of the device at this stage are very evident, in particular the lack of third-party content, and the limited ways of sharing the content you create in 4V, taking advantage of RED's technology and using double 8 megapixel front camera and 12 megapixel rear camera.
In a photo I took with my phone inside a subway station in New York City, my teenage daughter seems to be almost pressed against the screen, while other passengers at the station and the subway poles are clearly behind her.
In another photo, taken during an NFL game at MetLife Stadium, the spectators sitting in the row in front of me and in the row in front of them, are appropriately in the foreground, while the players on the field are much further away .
Unfortunately, you would need a RED phone to see such effects because, although I can share or publish these images, you will only see them in standard 2D without having your own RED screen.
In addition, many of the 4 V images are blurred or detached as a novel act that will quickly disappear.
Even more disturbing is that looking at the screen can make some of you sick. That did not happen to me or to my 11-year-old son, he was actually very positive with Hydrogen One, even impressed, but my wife and daughter reported that they had felt dizzy.
Taking 4 V photos is also uncomfortable, at least at this time. Capturing a 4V selfie means holding the phone vertically. But if you are filming with the rear cameras, you must turn it to the sides.
RED also promises a modular system to add accessories later, including a high-end camera that is supposed to transform the phone into one of the RED studio quality shooters where RED kinematic lenses can be placed. cost that has not been determined. A module of this type is off in the future, but the poor success story with Motorola, Essential and LG's expansion mods does not exude confidence accurately.
Meanwhile, missing the commercial content you might want to see in 4-View, with some movies and games at the launch. The first 10,000 of you who choose to buy the AT & T phone will have access to the downloadable 4V downloadable versions of "Fantastic Beasts" and "Ready Player One" in that format. Warner Bros. and Disney agree with the content: Warner is expected to deliver 10 to 15 titles at launch.
None of these titles were available to test. The applications and games designed for the screen were also extremely limited.
I did not do a formal battery test, but one thing that allows the big design of the phone is the inclusion of a huge and long-lasting battery.
I will give RED credit for his so-called A3D space audio. I connected my Bose headphones to the standard headphone jack, yes, there is one in the Hydrogen One and I heard the trailer for "The Incredibles 2". And yes, the sound was more amazing on the Hydrogen One than when I heard the same trailer through the same headphones on a Galaxy Note9.
To be fair, Jannard warned a recent press meeting that the devices they delivered to us were still a work in progress. With that in mind, I'll let RED bring the Hydrogen One to the kids so they have more seasonings before considering spending big league dollars on a phone that just is not ready.
