It is often said, and rightly so, that the first few minutes of a takeoff is the most critical phase of any space flight, whether manned or robotic, where many things can fail before the extreme forces that rush on them. But for those first ones it can also be the last opportunity to escape from a nefarious destiny if something fails, at least if you have an exhaust system ready to act when you need it. The Space Shuttle did not have them, unfortunately for the crew of the Challenger. Fortunately, Soyuz, whose history, under diverse forms and models, is extensive and full of experience, if they have it, and thanks to it Alexéi Ovchinin and Tyler Hague are alive today and in one piece.
The Soyuz MS-10 took off this past October 11 from Baikonur, taking these two astronauts to the ISS. However, they would never arrive, since something more than two minutes after the launch, and at the moment when the 4 blocks of impulse of the first stage separated, something went wrong, darn wrong, as seen in the images taken from the ground , and that suggests that the pyrotechnic system that causes this separation made a bad move. Anyway, and that the investigations should clarify, the crew activated the known as SAS emergency system and the capsule separated from the rocket, initiating a return to the ground in a ballistic trajectory.
Something that was not a walk for both men, as they faced, in addition to a turbulent journey and the tension of being struggling to survive, a deceleration of about 7g, nothing for which they are not trained and somewhat superior to the usual in a reentranted, but no less hard. They would touch earth at about 380 Kilometers of Baikonur, not far from the town of Zhezkazgan, where they would find the rescue teams sent, with a good beating on their backs but in one piece. Subsequent medical examinations cleared any fears about his health. Both they and their relatives, who were horrified by what was happening, could breathe easy.
A happy ending to what can be a tragedy, but that leaves several worrying issues on the table. On the one hand shows again that something does not work well at Roscosmos, and another raises what will happen with the ISS, which could be doomed to run out of crew at the beginning of the year, the deadline for its three current inhabitants to return, since is when the useful life of the Soyuz MS-09 currently docked in it. With the inevitable suspension of launches (manned) while investigating the causes and with the private ships, such as the Dragon 2 of Space X, which could only enter service as soon as well advanced 2019, things are complicated. We will have to be attentive to how the situation evolves.
But all this must make us forget what is important, and is that in a potentially lethal situation the two crew saved his life. Others did not have that luck.
