Three endemic species of marsupial frogs of the genus Gastrotheca inhabit the jungles of the Yungas of northwest Argentina. These amphibians are unique in the biodiversity of the country because the females of these marsupial frogs carry their tadpoles inside a sack of skin that they have on their backs, to then release them already quite developed in temporary streams where they complete the metamorphosis or directly "Give birth" to juveniles already trained, according to the species.

Despite their uniqueness, these species are threatened with extinction and in the case of the Baritú marsupial frog (Gastrotheca chrysosticta) had not been observed in their natural habitat in the Yungas of the province of Salta since the last confirmed record in the year 1993.

At the end of August, a group of scientists from the Institute of Andean Ecoregions (INECOA, CONICET-UNJu) integrated by Dr. Mauricio Akmentins, Lic. Martín Boullhesen and Lic. Sofía Bardavid, accompanied by personnel from the National Parks Administration (APN) as research assistants, Gpque. Fernando Falke and support staff Clemente Espinoza, recorded specimens of Gastrotheca chrysosticta in the Baritú National Park.

The registration of a healthy population of this species disappeared within the strict natural reserve area of the Baritú NP (Decree No. 2149/1990), represents an excellent chance for the future of the long-term preservation of the Baritú marsupial frog. In turn, the presence of this threatened species enhances the value of the conservation of the biodiversity of the jungles of the Yungas of this national park.

Also, during this visit to the park, scientists from the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) Akmentins and Boullhesen gave a course on identification of amphibians and species registration methods for the staff of the National Park of Baritú and the National Reserve. Nogalar de Los Toldos, contributing to the training of park guards and support staff in their role of assisting scientific research and protecting the biodiversity of these protected natural areas.
