He recently completed the second excavation campaign in El Sotillo (Ciudad Real) (Spain), co-directed by Manuel Santonja, of the National Research Center on Human Evolution (CENIEH), Alfredo Pérez Gonzalez (National Association "El Hombre y El Medio"). ) and Javier Baena, of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), in which more than five thousand utensils of the Mousterian industry have been recovered.
The previous campaign provided a basic knowledge of the stratigraphy of the deposit and the position of the levels with industry and allowed to begin the process of dating the deposit. This year, the works carried out have made it possible to advance in the knowledge of the characteristics of the archaeological assemblages represented in the site and their chronology, as well as the stratigraphy and the processes of formation of the levels with industry.
The El Sotillo sequence comprises three archaeological levels. The oldest, with a chronology close to 300,000 years, corresponds to the Acheulean and is characterized by the presence of large flakes transformed into cutting tools, as well as numerous bifacial axes.
The most recent set, with an age of around 60,000 years, belongs to the Mousterian, a technology focused on the production of small utensils, of which more than 5,000 have been registered in the recently completed campaign. Between them there is an intermediate level with industry also of the Acheulean type that will begin to be excavated next year.

The importance of El Sotillo lies precisely in the sequence of archaeological levels that it presents, unusual in deposits to the free air, usually with unique levels. On the other hand, this site contains the only paleolithic assemblages dated in the Castilian-La Mancha region.
"The date obtained for the Middle Paleolithic is particularly important, given that there are innumerable deposits associated with this archaeological horizon in the province of Ciudad Real and El Sotillo provides the first chronological reference for them," says Manuel Santonja.
