Recall the Jolt food supply chain
More than a dozen companies have removed millions of pounds of potentially contaminated food in recent days in a new challenge for food producers facing increased scrutiny of the food supply in the United States.
Food manufacturers across the country are withdrawing nearly 4 million pounds of food sent to grocery stores and distributors across the country, after a Canadian supplier removed the vegetables that are used as ingredients in their food. The US Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration said they are investigating why vegetables could be contaminated with salmonella and listeria.
Food companies are dealing with expensive withdrawals and an increase in multistate outbreaks of foodborne disease This year is partly due to advances in the detection of pathogens. The new regulations also require that food farmers and processors in the United States do more to prevent foodborne diseases.
"We're trying to protect public health," said a spokeswoman for the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, which investigates the latest cases of possible contamination with the FDA.
Prepared food company Bakkavor Foods USA Inc. on Sunday recalled about 800,000 pounds of meat and poultry products because they contain an onion ingredient that could be contaminated with pathogens. The products include a chicken pizza, breakfast burrito and other items that were shipped to retailers across the country, according to the USDA.
Bakkavor's retirement follows others last week from salad manufacturers sold at Whole Foods,
Walmart
Inc.
and Trader Joe's. Texas-based Ruiz Food Products Inc. on Friday recalled about 2.5 million pounds of beef and chicken taquitos that were shipped to distributors nationwide due to concerns about onions, the USDA said.
Ruiz Food Products said it found no evidence of bacterial contamination. "It remains dedicated to the quality of food and the health and safety of its consumers," said Rachel Cullen, the company's executive director.
Other food manufacturers have withdrawn food products due to concerns that pathogens may have contaminated ingredients such as corn and other vegetables.
Corn, onions and other vegetables were produced by McCain Foods USA Inc., a branch of Canadian manufacturer McCain Foods. The company says it is voluntarily withdrawing all products manufactured in a California facility after finding a potential health risk related to its products of frozen, caramelised or sautéed, roasted fruits and vegetables.
"We take our commitment to food safety very seriously and work hard to maintain the highest quality standards in our manufacturing processes," said a spokeswoman for the company.
Hy-Vee Inc., a Midwest supermarket chain, recalled six meat and potato products in eight states last week due to possible contamination. Hy-Vee said he recalled some baked potatoes, ground beef sliders and other products made with caramelized mushrooms and fire-roasted tomatoes produced by McCain.
No disease has been linked to food, the USDA said on Friday. The agency warned consumers not to eat any of the recalled products. Some of the products pose an additional risk to consumers because they are "ready to eat," which means they do not require cooking, a step that can kill pathogens.
Listeria It is a life-threatening bacterium that usually does not cause serious illness in healthy people, but poses a threat to pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
Salmonella It causes fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Most people recover without treatment, but the disease can be fatal in children, the elderly or people with weak immune systems.
