Pope to canonize Oscar Romero of El Salvador, Pope Paul VI

Thousands of people are gathering at the Vatican for the canonization of two of the leading figures of the 20th century Catholic Church: Pope Paul VI, who oversaw the reforms of the modernizing church of the 1960s, and Archbishop Oscar Romero , an icon of human rights that was killed for its defense of the poor of El Salvador.

Pope Francis will celebrate the mass of the saints on Sunday with the bloodstained rope belt that Romero used when he was shot dead in 1980 and with Paul VI's team, the goblet and the pallium clothing, evidence of the strong influence that both men had in the first Latin story. American Dad

Some 5,000 Salvadoran pilgrims traveled to Rome for the ceremony, and tens of thousands more stayed up all night to watch them on giant television screens outside the Cathedral of San Salvador, where the remains of Romero are.

For many, it was the culmination of a tense and politicized campaign for the church to formally honor a man who publicly denounced the repression by the military dictatorship of El Salvador at the beginning of the 1980-1992 civil war in the country.

"I'm here to give glory to Monsignor Romero," said Aida Guzman, a 68-year-old Salvadoran woman who carried pictures of people killed during the war when she joined thousands in a night procession in San Salvador. "He is a light for our people, an inspiration for all."

Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador, was shot dead by right-wing death squads while celebrating Mass on March 24, 1980 in a hospital chapel. A day before he was murdered, he had delivered the latest in a series of sermons demanding the end of army repression: sermons that had angered the leaders of El Salvador.

Almost immediately after his death, Romero became an icon of the South American left and frequently appears alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas Gandhi as one of the most influential human rights activists in the world. The United Nations commemorates the anniversary of his death every year.

His influence continues to resonate with the youth of El Salvador as the country suffers the brutal gang violence that has made the Central American nation one of the most violent in the world, a scourge that Francis has often lamented.

"He is my guide, and from what I read about his life, I want to follow in his footsteps," said Oscar Orellana, a 15-year-old boy who participated in the San Salvador procession in a white robe like Romero's. I used to carry.

Paul VI, on the other hand, is best known for having presided over the final sessions of the Second Vatican Council, the church meetings of 1962-65 that opened the Catholic Church to the world. Under its auspices, the church agreed to allow the liturgy to be celebrated in the vernacular rather than in Latin and called for greater roles for the laity and better relations with people of other religions.

Paul is also remembered for his two most important encyclicals, or teaching documents, which have had a profound effect on the church and on Francis: one, "The Progress of the Peoples" denounced the growing inequality between rich and poor, and the other , "Humanae Vitae", reaffirmed the opposition of the Catholic Church to artificial contraception.

The strict prohibition empowered the conservatives but pushed out the progressives. Even today it remains one of the most disputed and ignored papal encyclicals, with studies showing that most Catholics use contraception anyway.

Francis was deeply influenced by Paul, who was the pope of his formative years as a young priest in Argentina and contributed to the "preferential option for the poor" of the Latin American church.

Francis has designed his papacy in another of Paul's exhortations, and has adopted the "church of the poor" spirit that Paul embodied when he formally renounced wearing the jeweled papal tiara.
