Police officer accused of sexually assaulting a woman during a traffic stop.

A Maryland police officer was arrested after he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman during a traffic stop, his department said.

The driver said that the officer was on duty, in uniform and on a marked cruise when he sexually assaulted her at 1am on Thursday, said Prince George's County Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Donelan at a conference. press on Monday.

The woman showed up several hours later and "we immediately launched a special investigation response team that is part of our internal affairs division," Donelan said.

At a press conference on Monday night, police announced that the officer, Ryan Macklin, was arrested tonight and now faces five counts, including rape in the first and second grades and assault in the second degree.

A preliminary investigation showed that Macklin "stopped the driver early Thursday and forced the victim to perform a sexual act while both were sitting in his car in a nearby parking lot," police said in a press release.

There is no evidence, at this time, of why Macklin attacked this victim, police said. The investigators posted a surveillance video that showed Macklin activating his emergency equipment in his police vehicle to start the traffic stop where the alleged assault occurred.

There is evidence to believe that there may be additional incidents and the police are asking anyone in the community to come forward and report if they were attacked, said police chief Hank Stawinski.

Police are still collecting a "ton of evidence" and interviewing witnesses, authorities said.

Within hours of the woman's appearance, Macklin was suspended from his salary and his gun, insignia and cruiser were confiscated, police said.

Macklin had been with the department for the past six years.
