Perfectly Square Iceberg has many people bewildered and worried
If you have seen the movie "Titanic", you know that icebergs are not ice cubes. Apparently, Netflix is not available in Antarctica because a plane operated by NASA to scan the ice photographed an iceberg that looks more like a tombstone or a leaf cake or a frozen Christmas gift ... in other words, not It's nothing like a piece of Larsen C ice shelf broke. Is it real or are scientists stationed in Antarctica killing time with spikes, chainsaws and tape measures?
The iceberg suspected of sinking the Titanic.
"What makes this a bit unusual is that it looks almost like a square."
In an interview with LiveScience, Kelly Brunt, an ice scientist at NASA and the University of Maryland, described the block of ice discovered by an aircraft belonging to NASA. Operation IceBridge Fleet: a project whose objective is to measure the annual changes in the thickness of the Antarctic ice and glaciers to predict future breakages and landslides caused by climate change. The planes take a closer and faster look at these events than the IceSat satellites. Should we be worried that the ice will suddenly break in rectangular cuboid bergs so clean and precise?
"We received two types of icebergs: we have the kind that everyone can imagine in their head that sank the Titanic, and they look like prisms or triangles on the surface and you know they have a crazy subsoil. And then you have what are called "tabular icebergs".
Despite the predictable panic on the Internet when NASA posted photos on NASA's ICE # IceBridge Twitter account, Kelly assures the masses that this mass is rare but normal. For those who are not scientists (much appreciated, Kelly), she compares the process of iceberg birth with a long nail that cracks with a clean, straight edge on at least three sides. Also like a fingernail, the tabular iceberg is much wider than thick. This one is a mile wide and, although it probably looks like a fun place for Antarctic scientists to disappear from frozen steam playing mobile hockey, it warns that it is unstable and moves away from the Larsen C ice shelf in the Weddell Sea.

That explanation seems credible despite the dubious comments on various websites that it was actually caused by extraterrestrials, secret experiments or boring scientists. In any case, we hope that funding for cryospheric (ice-related) research projects will continue NASA ICE and Operation IceBridge. It may not be a movie worthy of a disaster, but it is critical to predict how many of us will be under water in a few years.
