Patourots of the McCourty pick-6 stamps & # 039; 25-6 win over Bills

Devin McCourty was pleased that the New England Patriots defense did not have to play a supporting role with Tom Brady and Co. for once.

With the Patriots leaning more on Stephen Gostkowski's leg than on Brady's arm against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, McCourty stepped forward and returned an interception 84 yards to secure a 25-6 victory.

"In the last couple of games it was our scoring offense and we were trying to keep the team out, this was a game where they were moving the ball and could not get into the end zone," McCourty said. "We had to make sure that Buffalo did not enter the final zone, and once it broke, we had to take advantage of it."

The interception proved to be the turning point in what had been a hotly contested game in which New England settled for four field goals from Gostkowski, and after James White scored in a yard to put the score 18-6 with 9:58 to play.

The Bills responded with what was initially discarded as a touchdown, when tight end Jason Croom appeared to make a one-handed diving catch in the end zone. The 25-yard catch was canceled when replays showed that Croom never had possession.

Two plays later, McCourty jumped in front of Derek Anderson's attempt to hit tight end Charles Clay in the middle.

"Those are bonus points, it's hard to count on them," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "It was a great play for us, they were driving in the red area and he turned around."

Buffalo lost its third consecutive game and dropped to 2-6 for its worst start since opening the 2010 season with eight losses.

The Bills offense continued its anemic ways of staying below 7 points for the fourth time this season, once again from what happened in 2013-17. Buffalo has scored just two touchdowns in his last five starts, a stretch that has been outscored by a margin of 116-37.

Runner LeSean McCoy took the offensive fights personally. Although he had the best 82-yard reception on the team, McCoy finished with only 13 yards on the ground and has yet to score this season.

"I'm 30. I've been playing since high school, this has never happened to me, yes, it's difficult," he said.

What hurts the most is that McCoy knows how the offense has defrauded the defense.

"It's not fair to them," he said. "I did not expect to have a season like this, I'm really not playing well, we're not doing much on offense."

Give credit to the Bills defense for not playing the role of the expected pushover against an offense led by Brady who scored 38 or more points in each of his last four games.

"You go out and keep those guys on a touchdown and you still can not win, it's tough, man," said Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White.

Stephen Hauschka was responsible for scoring by scoring field goals of 51 and 47 yards.

"Clearly it's not good enough," coach Sean McDermott said of his offense. "I thought the defense came out and played well sometimes, offensively, we got a little shot in the foot there, and we could not get it going."

Anderson finished 22 of 39 for 290 yards and two interceptions.

He was escorted off the field with 1:25 to play when he was fired by Kyle Van Noy. He was making his second start in place of rookie Josh Allen, who appears week by week with a sprained elbow on his pitching arm.

Brady finished with 29 of 45 for 324 yards, but he remained without a touchdown pass for the first time this season.

"They made it difficult for us," he said. "We could not put anything in the red zone, there are not enough positive plays down there."

Brady continued his all-race domination series over the Bills by improving to 29-3, extending the NFL record for most quarterback victories against an opponent.

The Patriots beat Buffalo for the seventh consecutive time and improved to 32-5 in their last 37 meetings with coach Bill Belichick.

THONMAN OF HONOR

The highlight for the Bills fans was a part-time ceremony in which the team retired Thurman Thomas' No. 34 runner.

He became the third player in the history of the Bills to receive the honor. Jim Kelly retired his No. 12 in 2001 and No. 78 of Bruce Smith was retired in 2016.

With the lights off in the sold-out stadium, the highlights of the Thomas Hall of Fame race were shown on the video scoreboard, while two spotlights projected 34s on the field. "When I look up and see that number 34 is removed with my name, they remind me that the number does not just belong to me," Thomas said. "He belongs to the fans of the Bills everywhere."

PRYOR VISIT

The Bills, in need of catcher and quarterback, had free agent Terrelle Pryor on an earlier visit that day. Pryor is a seventh-year player who was released by the New York Jets on Oct. 20 with an injury fix after injuring his groin.

Injuries

Patriots: rookie RB Sony Michel (left knee) and LB Dont'a Hightower (knee) were inactive.

Bills: rookie linebacker Tremaine Edmunds did not return in the second half after being diagnosed with a concussion.

UNTIL NEXT TIME

Patriots: Prepare for a showdown between Brady and Aaron Rodgers, who will host the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.

Bills: host of the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
