Owner of Hunt Chiefs surprised by Mahomes' rapid success

Not even the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, who gave the green light to change last year and select Patrick Mahomes in tenth place, expected his young quarterback to succeed so quickly.

During his mid-season discussion with reporters, Clark Hunt said Monday that Mahomes has defied the expectations of the entire recruiting room that night.

That includes then general manager John Dorsey, current general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid, who has been instrumental in his progress.

"I think there was a big question mark in all our minds as we entered the year with the transition as a field marshal," Hunt said. "We knew Patrick was very talented, but every time an NFL team leaves with a young quarterback it's a very challenging task."

"As we've seen, we've had Patrick ready since Week 1 and he's played outstandingly, maybe in an MVP caliber in the first eight weeks, and the credit really goes to Andy and his staff."

Mahomes spent the past season learning the ropes with Alex Smith, but was released when the Chiefs traded their Pro Bowl quarterback to the Washington Redskins this past season.

Mahomes responded by leading the Chiefs to a 7-1 record and first place in the AFC. He has seven consecutive games of 300 yards to eliminate the franchise record, and he already has six games with a passer rating of more than 100, the fifth most in a season in the history of the Chiefs.

And for no one to miss Smith, consider this fact: Mahomes already has 25 touchdown passes this season, matching what his predecessor achieved all last season.

"Patrick had a very good start in Week 1, and you know, everyone, including myself, was very enthusiastic about his performance, but was he a unique example of his talent or something that is going to be consistent?" Hunt said. "He's shown it every week and it's based on that."

The last dazzling performance by Mahomes came on Sunday against Denver, when he threw for 303 yards and four touchdowns. He also threw six touchdown passes in a game earlier this season.

"He also has excellent leadership skills," said Reid. "We have seen that this year it is very, very difficult for a young 22, 23 year old quarterback to enter an NFL locker room and almost overnight become one of the team leaders. "

Hunt addressed several other topics on Monday. Among them:

DEADLINE FOR CHANGE

Hunt said he has a hard time believing that the Chiefs will make moves before this week's trade deadline, and would be particularly reluctant to hand out a first-round pick.

"I value those elections very much, just like Brett and Andy," said Hunt. "It's not a light decision to change a selection, especially a first-round pick." Obviously, in retrospect, the decision to switch to Patrick, although it cost us a first-round pick, was a great decision. "

LEAGUE RATINGS

Television ratings are on the rise, and the Patriots-Chiefs game in Week 6 represented a 34 percent increase in the audience over the Giants-Broncos game on the same Sunday night last season.

"There was a lot of concern, I think, in the league and also on the part of those who follow the NFL about the decrease in grades in two consecutive years and that has changed, and I'm not sure it was expected," Hunt said.

"I heard people say that the NFL is more exciting this year, there are a number of high-powered offenses that help push that in. It's fun to see our offense play and I think that really helped the ratings, not only here in Kansas City, but also throughout the country. "

AFC WEST MOVES

Hunt called him too early to say if the rival Chargers and Raiders of the division made the right decision to move. The Chargers play at the StubHub Center in the suburbs of Los Angeles as they wait for their new stadium, while the Raiders play at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in anticipation of their move to Las Vegas for the 2020 season.

"I do not have much information about how the movements are going in terms of ticket sales for their new buildings," Hunt said, "and that's really what's important."

HELLO, HEADS

The Chiefs are playing against the Rams in Mexico City in a couple of weeks, and Hunt said he believes the opportunity will help the organization build its fan base south of the border.

"Every time we have the opportunity to show the Chiefs at the national level, and in this case international, it is a benefit for the organization," he said. "The good thing about this game is that we're not giving up a game at home to do it, it's a game at the Rams' house."
