Online harassment has become a fact of life.

According to a representative survey of 4,248 adults conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2017, 41 percent of Americans say they have experienced some kind of offensive name on the internet. I have endured severe forms of harassment online, such as physical threats, sexual harassment or harassment.

For some victims, these threats can become extreme, making it impossible to lead a normal life. Lenny Pozner, whose son Noah was killed in the shooting at Sandy Hook School in 2012, said he has moved six times because of death threats he has received. Conspiracy theorists had claimed that the Sandy Hook school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, had been organized by the government. Although Mr. Pozner shared his son's death certificate online, he was threatened repeatedly and his personal information was revealed online.

In this episode of Moving Upstream, Jason Bellini of WSJ visits the victims and perpetrators of online harassment, and watches the evolving legal landscape.
