Reporter: This is Jordan Brown when he was still a typical fifth grade student. The peewee football team quarterback, the warriors, trained by his father Chris, a single father. Jordan had always been the center of his father's universe. They were the best friends. They did everything together. Reporter: His hometown, Wampum, Pennsylvania, 40 miles north of Pittsburgh, a rural oasis for water and off-road enthusiasts. It is a very wooded area with many small cities. A lot of hills and it is very beautiful. Reporter: Jordan's childhood is full of typical birthday parties, zoos and pony rides. His father very close to his side. Jordan's smile lights up his primary school photos year after year. What was Jordan like, what kind of boy was he at 11? It was your average 11-year-old son. All American child. You know, he played sports - baseball, soccer - he had friends. Reporter: Today is Jordan Brown, now 21 years old, remembering that tender and precious moment in his life with affection. What kind of childhood would you say you had until 11? Normal, I suppose. I had friends who always came. We used to play always. Games, like, videogames. Reporter: And back then, Chris was happy too. Working in shipping at a local tableware factory, engaged to a woman he knew since his teens, Kenzie Houk. A hairdresser and housewife, and also a single mother. Mother of two girls, 7 year old jenessa and 4 year old adalynn. What made you love her? Who was she Who was she, a person. Kenzie was really a fighter. She was funny She always had a beautiful smile, she liked everyone and loved her children. That's all she said, when you say, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "I want to be a mother, I want children." Reporter: Kenzie, Chris and their children had recently moved together to this farm. The new mixed family seemed to be united. Jordan even called Kenzie "mom." How was your relationship with your stepmother soon to be? She was strong She was very nice She liked me a lot. She leaned back to him. She had a good relationship with him. Reporter: And a new brother was on his way. Chris and Kenzie anxiously awaited a baby together. A boy who had already been called Christopher. She was excited. That's what she wanted. I had showered, the clothes were washed. The diapers were where they were supposed to be and everything. Yes, she was ready. Reporter: Were you excited about the baby on the way? Oh yeah. Absolutely. I mean, what father would not be. I was happy. I always wanted a little brother. And he was a boy. So that's what I was going to get. Reporter: So you were excited about that. Yes, I was very excited. Reporter: It's a cold morning in February 2009. Kenzie is 8 and a half months pregnant. And their hopes for a future together as a family were about to break. I remember that I got up that morning, arriving a little late to work. She had asked me to stay at home that day and I did not. And that is something that has haunted me. Reporter: What do you remember? It was just a normal morning. My sister Janessa woke me up. Reporter: Kenzie is asleep in the room below. Jordan is in his room above. Once the baby arrived, they were going to change rooms, so Jordan had already lowered his clothes. I went down, picked up my clothes, went to the bathroom, got dressed. And we sat on the sofa waiting in the living room. And then Kenzie told us to leave because the bus is coming and we're going to be late. So we hurried, we went out the back door and ran down the driveway. I went to school. Reporter: Around 8:15 AM, Jordan and Janessa go to school. Adalynn, 4 years old, is asleep upstairs. 9:00 am, the tree cutters come to work around the house. Later, a tree cutter sees Adalynn at the door. Sobbing She tells him that her mother is dead. He calls 911. And when we got to the scene and did our initial evaluation, Kenzie was in the bedroom. Reporter: What was your impression? At that time, we assumed that somehow she had suffered a hemorrhage. We did not move it. At that point, we are trying to maintain the integrity of the scene. Reporter: When did you realize that you had a murder in your hands? The coroner was taking pictures and I was standing right on the edge of the door. And I remember the coroner said, when he started touching the body: "We have a problem." And that's when we realized it was a homicide. Reporter: Kenzie, 26, was shot in the back of the head, execution style. The police try to cpr but it's too late. Then the police make the dreaded call to Chris, telling him to go home immediately. They told me that the baby was gone. And I remember collapsing in the yard. I lost it. Reporter: Chris Brown is interviewed at the state police headquarters. Are you giving us this statement voluntarily? Yes. You are not under arrest, you are free, it is okay. Reporter: Was Chris Brown a suspect? Well, when you open an investigation, you have to leave everything open as to who may be suspects. Reporter: Chris describes his last moments with Kenzie. I gave her a kiss, I told her I loved her, she kissed me back and I left. Reporter: Chris had been working at the factory, and his hands are clean of gunpowder residue, so he is quickly removed as a suspect. Meanwhile, the police go to the Mohawk elementary school to talk to the children. Kenzie's daughter, Janessa, does not report anything out of the ordinary. It sounds like a typical morning for Jordan too. And they asked if something unusual had happened. And I just told you that, you know, it was just a normal morning. Reporter: But he does tell the police that he saw a black truck in the garage. In the first interview with the police, he mentioned that he saw a vehicle in the driveway. I did not think anything of that. You know, it's just a truck. I thought, you know, I was just a guy there, you know, doing work or something. Reporter: 3:30 A.M., the next morning, an afflicted father and son have managed to finally fall asleep, when someone breaks the silence of the night when someone knocks on their door. I had just fallen asleep, Jordan was in my arms. And they woke us up shortly after. Reporter: It's the police, they have an order to arrest Jordan. They took me to the police barracks. And I was there. And then they took me directly to the county jail. I was not with anyone. It was just a bunch of strangers.
