NFL winners Week 5, losers: Baker Mayfield picks up Browns, Blake Bortles has a brutal game
.
SportsPulse: Trysta Krick summarizes the weekend in the NFL and wonders if it's time to panic in New York and Atlanta.
USA NOWADAYSWeek 5 saw two teams remain undefeated and the only team without victories finally claimed a victory when the NFL teams began to round off in the middle section of the season, when they can complete or finish the playoffs. Here are the winners and losers of the weekend action.
The winners
Cleveland Browns: Credit for rookie number 1, Baker Mayfield, who concealed the poor offensive line game, especially at the end of the season. The victory of Cleveland 12-9. against the crows. Mayfield pocket awareness and mobility helped extend the plays. Neither was bigger than his 39-yard-deep overtime receiver Derrick Willies that put the Browns near the range of field goals. Mayfield (25 of 43 for 342 yards, a touchdown and an interception) made his pick on Cleveland's first drive, but it looked like an apparent lack of communication. The Browns may have to live with some Mayfield rookie mistakes, but so far he has shown that he can take the young team to the victories.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Coach Mike Tomlin focused on slow starts, early turnovers and penalties as the main problems for Pittsburgh's offensive problems. Well in a beating 41-17 of the Atlanta Falcons, the Steelers reversed the trend and scored touchdowns on their first two possessions in the first quarter to jump to an early lead. Pittsburgh mounted running back James Conner (185 yards of scrimmage and two touchdowns in 25 touchdowns), and no one mentioned the Le'Veon Bell dispute. There had been a lot of anguish about the chemistry between quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and full-time receiver Antonio Brown, but after the two connected six receptions for 101 yards and two touchdowns, the pair seems dangerous once again. For Pittsburgh, now it's all about consistency.
Game of running jets: Bilal Powell had 20 carries for 99 yards. But it was easily overshadowed by Isaiah Crowell, who punished the Denver Broncos in a beating of 34-16, at 219 yards rushing (a Jets franchise record) and a score in just 15 runs for an absurd average of 14.6 yards per attempt. New York hung 323 yards on the ground in a Denver defense that had entered the fifth week in eighth place in the league in quick defense (93.8 yards per game). At the end of the day, Denver was ranked 30 (139.6). The Jets had been inconsistent, and rookie quarterback Sam Darnold appeared to have been handcuffed in the previous weeks, but with the rushing offense hitting the Broncos' defense, he opened the passing game for Darnold, who averaged 9 yards per shot.
Houston Texans: Perhaps helped by a dubious call from Cowboys coach Jason Garrett to bat late in extra time in a quarter and one of Houston's own 42-yard line, The Texans won a 19-16 victory.. And because the Jaguars and Titans lost their games on Sunday, the Texans are just one game away in the AFC South with 2-3. Quarterback Deshaun Watson (415 total yards, one touchdown and one interception) and defensive end J.J. The watts (two tackles, one sack, one loss match, two QB hits) seem to be in full health, so Houston could be on the verge of a race. But for Texans to be true contenders, they need more of their O line, because Watson was under constant pressure.
Losers
Blake Bortles: It was just a miserable show for Bortles, who had four selections in the loss 30-14 against a defense of the Chiefs that had been susceptible to big plays. Kansas City intercepted two passes inside its own end zone (Bortles actually threw one directly into the helmet of one of his linemen) and selected another on his own one-yard line. The other interception was returned for a touchdown by defensive tackle Chris Jones. The Jacksonville defense produced some big plays, but Bortles' carelessness with the ball in scoring situations condemned the Jaguars.
Mason Crosby: A week after the tensions between Aaron Rodgers and coach Mike McCarthy boiled, it got worse for Green Bay in a loss of 31-23 against the lions. The Packers had three turnovers, zero points, and lost 24 points in half. But it was Crosby, the kicker from the Green Bay place, who he took the brunt of the defeat. Crosby missed the field goals of 41, 42, 38 and 56 yards. He also lost an extra point for a total of 13 remaining points on the board, a total that would have given the Packers a victory. Crosby made a field goal late, but after that, the Packers could be looking to move forward.
Miami Dolphins: The good news first; Miami raced to a 17-point lead on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals, and at the end of the day remained tied for the first time, with the Patriots, in the AFC East. Now, the bad; The Dolphins left 27 unanswered from the middle of the third quarter until the final whistle. lose 27-17. Field quarterback Ryan Tannehill had three turnovers, leading to 14 points, and he could not protect the ball with the game in play. The rushing offensive, once again, could not chew the clock. Two weeks ago, Miami was 3-0. Now, after falling two in a row, the Dolphins could be sliding.
Philadelphia Eagles: Although the second half was better, the Eagles simply are not as effective as they were last season. They fought back, but finally it fell short, 23-21, to the Vikings. The same problems keep appearing for Philadelphia, which is now 2-3, although it is still tied for second place in the NFC East. Against Minnesota, the Eagles converted just two of nine third-down attempts and scored touchdowns in just two of five trips to the red zone. Last year, those areas were strengths (ranking eighth in the third down down rate and the first in the red zone conversion rate). In this season, they are passive (19 and 16, respectively). If the eagles continue fighting, forget about a Super Bowl defense, could be found in a hole too big to reach the playoffs in a stacked NFC.
