NFL giddy at this time, you should watch out for storm clouds
The owners of the NFL were almost dizzy about the state of their game when they left their fall meetings on Wednesday. That's how commissioner Roger Goodell was.
It's easy to do when the TV ratings rise, the audience in all digital media is strong, the scoreboards are practically exploding with all the points that are scored, and the number of matches closed for six weeks has been striking.
There is also the possibility of attracting billionaires from other sports when the NFL franchises hit the market now that a cross-ownership ban has been lifted. Going in the other direction, the billionaires are free to buy equipment in baseball, hockey or basketball that are not in their NFL areas.
"I leave you with something I've told the owners many times," said Goodell. "I do not think there's been a better time to be an NFL fan, the quality of the games and the pleasure that comes with that is what I hear from fans all the time, that's No. 1 for them. It's the access to games and the way fans can participate in the NFL, there are more platforms and more opportunities to do it, the experience is better thanks to technology, all that creates a much better opportunity for our fans. enjoy and football of the NFL.

However, there are storm clouds ahead.
The unilateral policy that the league elaborated in May preventing players from demonstrating against the social and racial injustice in the banking during the national anthem remains in limbo.
The players union and its members fought against the policy that would allow players to remain in the locker room during "The Star-Spangled Banner", but could not kneel or sit in front of the team's benches during the anthem.
And although Goodell correctly cited the strong and widespread participation of the community and players in the community, the protests have not disappeared, nor should players be penalized for expressing their concerns.
Colin Kaepernick, who knelt during the anthem was soon embraced by many of his teammates, has not been with a team since 2016. That comes down to the individual teams, of course, and not to the league itself, and it is uncertain that Kaepernick would do it. Return to the field if you are given the opportunity.
But does anyone really believe that the opportunity could come?
There has also been a fanatic and a vortex of the media, with complaints from coaches and players, both in public and in private, about the inconsistency of officiating. When a defensive player admits that he gave up in a stroke to avoid a call to the quarterback, that is a bad sign. Those defenders already have little idea of what a fault is.
A week, lowering the helmet to initiate the contact, by the offensive or the defense, draws a flotilla of yellow flags. Another week, when "incidental contact" is added to the equation, the penalties decrease exponentially.
For your credit, the NFL is making a great effort with its rules to make the game safer. A mechanism for that is the consistency with the implementation of them.
Another way to keep players healthy and safe would be to increase the size of the lists on game day. The Colts entered a recent meeting with the Patriots minus five starters and lost some more during the loss.
It's hard enough trying to win at Foxborough with a full complement of players. With the third row stringers in the field, give Indy credit for not having lost completely.
The nonsensical requirement that seven of the 53 active players be declared inactive on game day can lead to more inequities of this type. If the teams are paying 53 boys, that suits all.
In fact, as we move forward, the union should look for expanded lists, and not just for additional salaries. That would help make the game safer, in part because fewer hit men ended up in the field.
Also ahead, although not until 2021, is the expiration of the labor agreement. Already, both sides are building "war chests" for the possible blocking or exit of the players. Neither owners nor players have shown an inclination for at least preliminary peace talks, so to speak.
Then, again, why would they do it at this point, with so many positive indicators?
