Thanks to the financial support of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of Germany, a project is being carried out that will help Honduras, and four other countries (Indonesia, Rwanda, Uganda and Peru), to incorporate the potential of trees on farms in the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy; which has the mandate to transfer the goals of the United Nations Biodiversity Convention (UNCBD) called "Aichi" to the national context.

The project lasts four years (2018-2022) and was profiled by a consortium of institutions led by the World Center for Agroforestry (ICRAF) and integrated by CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the George-August University of Gottingen and the Leibnitz University of Hanover, both of Germany.

According to Edwin García, coordinator of the CATIE-Honduras project, the objective is to improve the capacity of countries to achieve several Aichi targets for biological diversity; especially with regard to Aichi # 2 targets (biodiversity values have been integrated into national and local development and poverty reduction strategies and planning processes, and are being incorporated into national accounts, as appropriate, and in the reporting systems), Aichi # 7 (the areas of agriculture, aquaculture and forestry are managed in a sustainable manner, guaranteeing the conservation of biodiversity) and Aichi # 20 (greater mobilization of financial resources for the effective implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biological Diversity 2011-2020).

"Knowledge about the links between trees, agriculture and biodiversity will be increased and will provide tools for producers, extension agents, decision makers and investors. In addition, it will evaluate a range of financing and investment options to increase investment in trees in agriculture and help local partners to develop action plans and business plans, "Garcia said.

In addition, he added that the project will prepare manuals describing viable, cost-effective and attractive options to increase the use of trees on agricultural land in each country and will design a biodiversity assessment tool that can be used to measure the contribution of trees in farms to biodiversity and sustainability, which will help governments verify efforts to restore ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes.

García explained that the first step in the implementation of the project in Honduras was an insertion workshop to reestablish contact with local actors and begin the construction of a joint agenda. This workshop, held in June, was attended by more than 20 organizations, among which were representatives and decision makers from various sectors such as ministries, local units, representatives of production chains, international cooperation agencies and academia.

Workshop participants endorsed the goals and impacts expected with the project; optimize the management of trees on the farms to improve the livelihoods of the rural population, conserve biodiversity and help the government meet and report their contributions to the Aichi target. Like its operational proposal; use science to show evidence of the value of trees on the farm, to improve livelihoods and biodiversity, and improve the legal and political frameworks to stimulate the planting, management and use of these trees.

"The idea is to also include other guilds and chambers of agricultural and forestry producers and representatives of the national financial system that support agricultural and forestry production in the country and that could incorporate the financing of trees on the farm in their financial portfolios," García added. .

Within the next activities of the project in Honduras is the workshop: "Development of a set of biodiversity assessment tools to track progress in Aichi target 7", to be carried out in Tegucigalpa, from 11 to 17 November of this year, with the participation of more than 20 international biodiversity experts from the five countries where the project is being implemented.
