Hof was found unconscious and then pronounced dead at his private residence in his brothel Love Ranch west of Las Vegas, Sharon Wehrly, Sheriff of Nye County, told The Associated Press.
Wehrly, who also serves as the county's investigating judge, said he saw Hof at his birthday party Monday night in the reception room of a local casino-hotel with more than 100 of his friends, including the former sheriff. from the Phoenix Joe Arpaio area.
"I was sitting on a stool talking to people when I left at 10," Wehrly said. "I guess it's a party at 72".
The sheriff said there was no preliminary indication of foul play, but her office was investigating. An autopsy will be performed by the Clark County coroner in Las Vegas, he said.
Hof, who turned 72 on Sunday, was the Republican candidate in a strongly republican state legislative district. He had said that his party would have the presence of porn star Ron Jeremy and Arpaio, the six-period sheriff in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
It was not immediately clear on Tuesday if Jeremy attended, but Arpaio confirmed that he had been at the party Monday night and was shocked to learn of Hof's death.

The former sheriff, known nationally for his positions on illegal immigration, said Hof was in a good mood when Arpaio left the party around 10 p.m. Monday.
Arpaio, who lost a Republican Party elective in the Arizona Senate in August, said he had participated in some of Hof's campaign efforts and that Hof had asked him to speak at the party. The representative of the law said that he gave his comments to the crowd, wished Hof well and ate birthday cake.

Before the birthday celebration, Hof scoffed on Twitter that the reality television star and rapper Flavor Flav would be there.
But Flavor Flav's lawyer, Kristina Wildeveld, said on Tuesday her client did not attend.
Wildeveld said Flavor Flav, now 59, appeared on a reality show with Hof. "Flavor of Love" by Drayton was published about a decade ago, almost at the same time as the HBO series "Cathouse" by Hof.
Hof owned a handful of brothels in Nevada, the only state that allows them to operate legally.
His brothel Love Ranch outside of Pahrump is where NBA player Lamar Odom was found unconscious in 2015.
The brothel was temporarily closed twice this year by regulators who said that Hof did not renew the licenses and did not obtain adequate permits for renovations.
Around 20 brothels operate in Nevada, mainly in rural areas. The state does not publish how many are open, and most owners maintain a lower profile than Hof's.
In addition to his legislative campaign, Hof faced a push to ban brothels and had problems with local regulators in the two counties where he runs the licensed brothels.
Hof had also been charged with sexual assault on at least four occasions. The Nevada Department of Public Safety has said it was investigating a complaint made in September, but that it has released some details.
Hof had denied any crime.
In addition to "Cathouse," the extravagant Hof wrote a book titled "The Art of the Pimp," a play about Trump's book "The Art of the Deal."

Thorley said that the ballots under the name of Hof have already been printed and mailed to voters, but posters will be placed at the polling places to notify voters that he has died.

Hof was running against Las Vegas Democratic educator Lesia Romanov.
Hof also ran for a position in 2016 as a libertarian but lost the race.
This year, he ran as a Republican and got the backing of Trump associate Roger Stone and tax activist Grover Norquist.
In summer, he defeated Nevada politics when he toppled a titular Republican legislator in a primary, celebrating at an election night party with "Madame" Heidi Fleiss.
He said the push against the brothel and the regulatory problems he faced this year were political reprisals.
