NASA has provided an update on the continuing investigation of a small air leak on board the orbital laboratory that astronauts patched on August 30.
"Russian media recently reported that Director General Rogozin said the hole was not a manufacturing defect," the statement said. "Discarding a manufacturing defect It indicates that this is an isolated problem that does not affect categorically the future production ".
Rogozin and NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine will meet in person for the first time next week, a scheduled visit to coincide with the launch of cosmonaut Alexy Ovchinin and astronaut Nick Hague. The two leaders spoke on video last month about the Russian research in the fugue too.
Today's statement from NASA confirms that the investigation is ongoing and that NASA is also investigating the matter. "This conclusion does not necessarily mean that the hole was created intentionally or with bad intention. NASA and Roscosmos are investigating the incident to determine the cause, "the statement continued. The International Space Station Program is tentatively planning a spacewalk in November to gather more information. "
The air leak was detected on August 29 after a slight drop in pressure aboard the station, which then goes back to a hole 0.08 inches wide (2 millimeters) in a Soyuz capsule that was attached to the Space station in June and will continue there until October. The hole was patched successfully and, as it is in a module that does not return to Earth, it will not impact the astronauts' ability to return in December.
