Mother and daughter meet for the first time in 52 years.
.For Valerie Leatherwood, 73, this is the longest running race she has had to wait. She has been waiting 52 years to see someone special.
"I ended this phone call a couple of months ago with a daughter I thought would go to my grave without telling anyone," Leatherwood said.
Five decades ago, Valerie, 20, worked in a nursing home in Minnesota when she unexpectedly became pregnant.
She says her supervisor, a nun, sent her to a nanny away from home to hide the pregnancy.
Five weeks after the birth of her baby, Valerie abandoned her. She did not even tell her family.
"That was a 52-year secret that I kept," Leatherwood said with a smile.
A few months after Valerie's niece and brother sent DNA samples to Ancestry.com, Valerie's daughter, now an adult, found them.
"My niece wanted to know of any member of our family who had left a baby for adoption 52 years ago. I said I have no idea who it would be, "said Leatherwood's sister, Diana Mindt." She says, 'Diane, I gave her a girl 52 years ago.' I mean you could have hit me with a pen. "
The family contacted Valerie's lost daughter, Mia Keske Anderson.
"I have all these strange feelings right now, I was scared, nervous, excited," Anderson said.
Anderson grew up in the Midwest, always wondering about his biological mother.
"I wanted to find it, and it worked," Anderson said. "I just want to meet you both. Find out everything you can about them, "he said, addressing his biological aunt and his mother.
The mother and the daughter say that they already found that they have much in common.
"It's good to see where I get my cheeks from," Anderson said.
