More than 90% of the world's children breathe toxic air daily

Breathing contaminated air is one of the main threats to the health of the youngest. According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), 93% of children are exposed to high levels of fine particles that exceed air quality limits. In total, some 1,800 million children under the age of 15 breathe dirty air daily.

The study, published on the occasion of the celebration of the first World Conference on Air Pollution and Health, between October 30 and November 1, indicates that the smallest are more vulnerable to the effects of pollution because they breathe faster than adults, so they absorb a greater number of harmful particles.

In this sense, height is also a determining factor: in the stage of growth, in which both the body and the brain of children are in full development, live closer to the ground, which accumulates a higher concentration of pollutants.

"The contaminated air is poisoning millions of children and ruining their lives," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the WHO. "This is inexcusable. Every child should be able to breathe clean air to be able to grow to their full potential. "

Newborns and children at younger ages are also more susceptible to the polluting effects produced by appliances or technologies within homes. Pollution influences neurological development and cognitive capacity and can cause asthma or even childhood cancer. In addition, infants may have a higher risk of suffering from chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases years later. In 2016 alone, there were 600,000 infant deaths due to respiratory infections caused by contaminated air.

Also, pregnant women who live in places with insecure air, are more likely to give birth prematurely and have children of a weight and size below average.

"The contaminated air is atrophying the brain of children, which affects their health in more ways than we suspected. But there are simple ways to reduce hazardous emissions, "said María Neira, the director of the department of Public Health, Environment and Social Determinants of Health of the organization.

"The WHO is supporting the implementation of health-friendly policies, for example, by accelerating the shift towards cleaner fuels and household technologies and promoting the use of greener transport and efficient urban construction and planning," he added.

On the other hand, the report highlights that countries with lower incomes have a higher percentage of risk: 98% of children up to five years breathe toxic air, compared to 52% of the child population in countries with a higher income level.

The World Conference on Air Pollution and Health, which starts tomorrow, aims to bring together governments and partners in the framework of a global mobilization to improve air quality and combat climate change. This international organization is in charge of ensuring compliance with the indicator of the Sustainable Development Goal, focused on reducing by 2030 the number of deaths and diseases caused by air pollution.
