The comment aroused concern in Japan, where local media published front-page stories in a sign of whether Washington could criticize any future attempt by Tokyo to keep the yen at bay as currency manipulation. 

Mnuchin told reporters that the United States would like to incorporate, in future trade agreements, a provision that applied to the renegotiation of NAFTA that discourages members from manipulating the currency. 

"Our goal would be for foreign exchange problems ... We would like to include them in future trade agreements with everyone, I am not highlighting Japan for that," Mnuchin said on Saturday, when asked if the United States would discuss the currencies. in trade negotiations with Japan.

Japan's Economy Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who oversees trade negotiations with the United States, said on Sunday that he had not discussed the currencies so far with his counterpart, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. 

"If discussions on this issue become necessary, they will be carried out by the finance ministers of both countries," Motegi said in a television program, in response to Mnuchin's comment. 

Mnuchin has also attacked China over recent declines in the yuan, a sign that Washington could turn the currency into a central part of future trade negotiations. 

US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed in September to start trade negotiations in an agreement that, for now, protects Japanese automakers from additional tariffs.
