Michigan Man Discovers His Barn Doorstop Is Actually to Meteorite Worth $ 100,000

A rock that had been used as a barn door stop on a Michigan farm for more than 30 years is actually a massive meteorite It is worth more than $ 100,000.

The 22 pounds. (10 kilograms) It is believed that the meteorite landed in the 1930s on a farm in Edmore, Michigan. Earlier this year, the man who bought the farm in 1988 and got the meteorite As part of the property he brought the space rock to Central Michigan University (CMU) for examination.

Mona Sirbescu, professor of geology at CMU, took a closer look at the rock. Although many people had asked him to examine rocks in the past, he knew that this time it was different, he said. As a result, this meteorite is the sixth largest found in Michigan and has a potential value of $ 100,000, according to a statement from CMU.

"I realized immediately that this was something special," Sirbescu said in the CMU statement. "It's the most valuable specimen I've had in my life, monetarily and scientifically."

When the man bought the farm in 1988, he was told that the rock that held the barn door open was actually a meteorite that the previous owners saw falling from the night sky in the 1930s. The rock created a hole in the ground when He fell to Earth, and when the farmer and his son went out to retrieve the object in the morning, it was still hot, according to the statement.

The rock remained like a barn door top for the past 30 years, after the current owner bought the farm. However, when people found small meteorites after the meteor that burned through the skies of Michigan Last January, the current owner of the farm wondered how much his cap was worth.

Meteorites are pieces of debris from the natural space that come off asteroids or comets, fall through Earth's atmosphere and reach the surface of the planet. While large impacts are quite rare, thousands of meteorites a weight of about one pound (0.5 kg) hit the ground every year.

Using X-ray fluorescence instruments, Sirbescu found that the meteorite at the top of the door is about 88 percent iron and 12 percent nickel, a metal that is rarely found on Earth, the statement said.

Sirbescu sent a sample of the space rock to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., where the researchers analyzed the rock further and confirmed it was a meteorite.

A sample of the meteorite was also sent to John Wasson, a professor in the Department of Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. Wasson is considered the "iron meteorite guru" and will perform a neutron activation analysis to determine the chemical composition of the meteorite. This, in turn, could reveal rare elements that would increase the value of the meteorite, according to the statement.

"Just think, what I was holding is a piece of early solar system That literally fell into our hands, "said Sirbescu.

The farmer has not yet decided if the meteorite will be sold to a collector or museum to be displayed. Both the Smithsonian and a Maine museum are considering buying the rock, according to the statement.

In any case, when the meteorite is sold, the man has promised to donate part of the money to CMU. However, university students have already benefited by being able to maintain a meteorite in real life, Sirbescu said.
