Mathematics to calculate the safest walking route in a city

Researchers at the University of Cardiff in the United Kingdom are developing a mobile phone application that guides pedestrians on the safest route, instead of the fastest route, to their destination. Using algorithms, developed by them, that predict the probability of accidents on the road with a remarkable success rate, the new application will help pedestrians avoid crossing between sidewalks in streets where traffic is too problematic.

The system is capable of scoring the safety of a certain area, and it is expected to help reduce traffic accidents and especially the abuses.

According to the Department of Transport of the United Kingdom, pedestrians accounted for 24 percent of all fatalities in the country's roads in 2015.

At the moment, applications like Google Maps only provide people with the fastest route to their destination. These applications do not take into account the characteristics of the streets and roads or the dangers associated with them. An inadequate state of the road can cause the loss of control of a car, with the consequence of a collision between vehicles or the pedestrian.

The team of Padraig Corcoran has designed the novel system to score the safety of an area and predict with great accuracy the possible number of deaths on the road.

The computer algorithm takes into account a number of factors, such as the types and number of crossings, the kind of street, the possibility of pedestrians deciding to cross recklessly from one sidewalk to the other at a point on a street and the speed limits of each public road in a given area.

The score is made automatically, simply by entering raw data from a map of any given area.

The application has already been tested in 15 cities in the UK: Bath, Bedford, Blackpool, Bristol, Coventry, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Reading, Salford, Sheffield, Swindon and York. Of these 15 cities, Liverpool was classified as the one with the most risky roads, while Bath was considered the one with the safest.

The researchers believe that this novel system could be of great value for planning and urban development, especially when evaluating how changes in an urban infrastructure could affect the safety of public roads.

In the short term, the goal of the team is to develop an application that people can use to know the safest possible route to their destination.
