The production of building materials normally releases carbon dioxide. US researchers have developed a material that absorbs greenhouse gas, during hardening, but also throughout its life.
Where to put carbon dioxide in the air?
Many researchers are investigating this question. Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a material that extracts gas from the atmosphere.
The material developed by the team led by the chemist Michael Strano is a polymer in the form of gel. When it absorbs carbon dioxide, it hardens. The mechanism is similar to that of plants that absorb gas from the atmosphere and then incorporate it into their tissue.
 
The diagrams illustrate the self-healing properties of the new material. 
The researchers imagine that their invention could be used as a building material in the future: the material could be used to produce panels that would then be transported to the construction site where they would harden with sunlight. Until then, however, you still have to do research work.
The advantage of the material is that it recovers automatically: if the surface is damaged, such as cracks or scratches, they close as soon as the material is exposed to light. This can be sunlight or artificial light. The material therefore permanently absorbs carbon dioxide.
