Mass meeting to promote moderate Islam in Indonesia canceled
Organizers of an Indonesian movement to promote a moderate brand of Islam have canceled a massive rally after their young supporters burned the flag of an illegal hard-line Muslim group, prompting accusations of blasphemy.
The demonstration in Yogyakarta, which is expected to attract 100,000 people, was canceled to prevent violence, said Yahya Cholil Staquf, secretary general of Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia.
The video of the members of the youth arm of Nahdlatul Ulama burning the flag of the outlawed group, Hizbut Tahrir, has caused controversy in Indonesia because the flag is also adorned with the declaration of Islamic faith. Their uniforms indicated that they are part of the militia of the youth organization.
At least 1,000 people protested the burning of the flag in Jakarta and Bandung on Friday, demanding the prosecution of those responsible.
Protesters dressed in white Islamic robes stopped traffic outside the security ministry in Jakarta, waving flags with Arabic text professing belief in one God and chanting "God is great" and "There is no God except Allah."
Staquf said that the "agents" of Hizbut Tahrir interrupted the celebrations of the youth wing and exploited the religious symbols, which led to the burning of the flag.
He said that the "provocation and sabotage" campaign was widely considered to be led by political forces in the hope of influencing the outcome of Indonesia's presidency. choice in April.
Some 70,000 members of Ansor, the youth arm of Nahdlatul Ulama, were heading to Yogyakarta for the demonstration to coincide with the launch of an interreligious movement aimed at countering extremism worldwide.
"New incidents of provocation were planned, and it would be difficult for our members to control their anger at such blatant exploitation of our religious symbols," Staquf said.
The image of Indonesia, the most populous Muslim nation in the world, as religiously moderate, was undermined last year when the governor of the Christian minority in the capital, Jakarta, was jailed for blasphemy following street protests against him that attracted hundreds of thousands.
Hizbut Tahrir, who is seeking a global caliphate, was banned by the Indonesian government last year.
