Mark Penn: After the bomb fears, Democrats and Republicans have a job to do (and the fault is to share)
Mark Penn: After the bomb fears, Democrats and Republicans have a job to do (and the fault is to share)
The horrific acts of the political vigilantes who planted possible pipe bombs must bring both parties together in their opposition to political violence and in favor of restoring civility in politics. They should appear together in the Rose Garden of the White House and in the Capitol rotunda united in defense of our country and our democracy.
President Trump, who has sometimes been deaf in times of crisis, played exactly the right chord when he called for national unity and reduced the tone of rhetoric on all sides.
But the Democrats, the minority leader in the Senate Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. and the minority leader of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, aborted the opportunity to join the calls of both parties for a better policy. Instead, they blamed President Trump for any potential violence, alleging that he has often tolerated violence and that his words sound hollow. They politicized bombing attempts without even knowing the facts.
Then, some media outlets weighed in blaming the President's attacks on the media as a cause. However, it would be equally unfair to blame CNN for ricin's power sent to President Trump.
This was a huge missed opportunity. The media and some politicians simply could not put aside their blind hatred and, instead, direct it to those who would disturb our country.
And now the president has pointed a finger at the media in return.
As of today, we do not know if these devices were able to explode. We do not know who sent them and why. I'm not even going to speculate about possible reasons. Simply, at this point we do not know and we do not have real evidence to judge.
In contrast, when a crazed Bernie Sanders supporting an armed man opened fire on a Republican congressman on a baseball diamond, the Republicans did not blame the Democrats for inciting violence. In any case, they avoided making comments that could be interpreted as politicizing the incident. They followed here the golden rule of never politicizing violence against politicians. We have lost too many of our greatest leaders to murder them and to open the door, even a blow to blame each other for these acts.
And newspapers like the New York Times do not serve their readers by pointing out Trump's rhetorical excesses in his stories about the pipeline bomb, but omitting comments from Democratic leaders who urged to kick Republicans or abandon the civility. No one has completely clean hands here, and no one other than the perpetrators is truly responsible for these acts.
We are in a dangerous spiral and once again we are being manipulated by the surprises of October of unknown origin. Trump has been tough on his critics, but he has never defended political violence against his opponents. The Democrats in recent times approved the shouting and public shame of government officials, but with justice they never advocated violence. If the massive shipment of pipe bombs does not bring our country together in ways that rise above partisanship, then how will we solve problems like immigration and medical care?
It is time for all our leaders to show that they can put the nation first in petty politics and appear together, united against violence as one voice. If not now when?
