Mahathir from Malaysia says the Uyghurs were released because they did nothing wrong

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia freed 11 Uighur Muslims who fled to the Southeast Asian nation after a Thai jailbreak last year because they did nothing wrong there, Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Monday.

Reuters, citing the men's lawyer, reported last week that Malaysia had released the 11 from detention and had sent them to Turkey, regardless of China's request to deliver them to Beijing.

"They have not done anything wrong in this country, so they are released," Mahathir said in brief comments to reporters in parliament, the first of the Malaysian government since his release.

The Malaysian move will likely force ties with China, which have already been tested since Mahathir won a surprise election victory in May and canceled more than $ 20 billion in projects awarded to Chinese companies.

China, which had requested his extradition, said on Friday it was "resolutely" against Malaysia's decision to release the 11 Uighurs and send them to Turkey.

Prosecutors in the Muslim majority in Malaysia dropped the charges against the Uighurs for humanitarian reasons, his lawyer said.

The men were arrested and charged with illegally entering Malaysia after the bold November prison escape, during which they plowed holes in a prison wall and used blankets as ladders.

Reuters reported in February that Malaysia was under great pressure from China to send the men there. Some Western missions tried to dissuade Kuala Lumpur from sending them to China, which has been accused of persecuting the Uyghurs.

Beijing accuses separatist extremists of the Uighur minority for planning attacks on China's Han majority in the troubled western region of Xinjiang and elsewhere.

China has been accused of human rights abuses in Xinjiang, torture of Uighur detainees and strict controls on their religion and culture. Denies the crime.

Over the years, hundreds, possibly thousands, of Uighurs have escaped the riots by clandestinely traveling through Southeast Asia to Turkey.
